The first step to losing weight is to know what causes weight gain in people. Many factors cause weight gain in people, such as:
Genetics
The first step toward weight loss is understanding that you have a genetic predisposition to gaining weight. This means that if you were born with specific genes, you would be more likely to gain weight than someone who was not born with those same genes. These genes are called “obesogenic” because they make us more prone to obesity.
This is because our bodies respond differently to food depending on our genetics. For example, we store extra calories as fat when we overeat sugar. We also tend to burn fewer calories after eating a meal than someone without these genes.
While this is true, it doesn’t mean that you cannot change your lifestyle habits to prevent yourself from gaining weight. You can do things to minimize the effects of your genetic makeup.
For example, you can avoid processed foods instead of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, nuts, seeds and legumes.
Hormones
Another factor that contributes to weight gain is hormones. Hormonal changes occur throughout life, but puberty is when hormone levels peak. During puberty, girls experience hormonal changes that cause them to grow taller and develop breasts. Boys experience similar changes that cause them to become more muscular and build muscle mass.
These hormonal changes lead to increased appetite and decreased energy expenditure. As a result, adolescents often overeat and fail to exercise enough. Over time, this leads to weight gain.
However, during pregnancy, women produce large amounts of estrogen and progesterone. Both of these hormones increase appetite and decrease energy expenditure. As a consequence, pregnant women tend to put on weight quickly.
Pregnancy is also linked to higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels in both mother and baby.
Diabetes
Being overweight or obese is strongly correlated with type 2 diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 90 percent of people with diabetes are overweight or obese.
People with diabetes are twice as likely to die prematurely compared to their non-diabetic counterparts. They are also more likely to suffer from heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, amputations, blindness, nerve damage and impotence.
There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin. People with type 1 diabetes must inject themselves with insulin daily to survive.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces insufficient insulin, or the cells do not react appropriately. In most cases, the cause of type 2 diabetes is unknown. However, several risk factors are associated with developing type 2 diabetes, including being older, having high blood pressure, being overweight or obese and having a family history.
The good news is that there are ways to reverse type 2 diabetes. It’s important to note that while losing weight may help control blood glucose levels, it won’t cure type 2 diabetes.
Lack Of Exercise
Exercise helps us maintain a healthy weight by burning off excess calories—our metabolism increases when we exercise, which causes our body to use up stored fats.
In addition, exercising strengthens muscles and bones, improves cardiovascular health and reduces stress. All of these benefits contribute to maintaining a healthy weight.
Unfortunately, many Americans don’t get enough physical activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that only about half of adults meet the minimum recommended amount of physical activity each week.
A sedentary lifestyle has been linked to obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression and other chronic diseases.
Nutritional Choices
Poor nutrition choices can cause obesity. For example, overeating sugar, refined carbohydrates and processed foods can lead to weight gain. These unhealthy food choices can also trigger cravings for sweets and salty snacks.
Eating too little fiber can also lead to weight gain. Fiber helps keep you feeling full longer, so you eat less overall. Eating too few fruits and vegetables can also lead to weight problems because they contain vitamins and minerals your body needs to function well.
If you’re trying to lose weight, you should focus on making healthier nutritional choices.
