Sidelying Shoulder External Rotation:

Sidelying shoulder external rotation (ER) is a powerhouse move for isolating the infraspinatus and teres minor, two critical muscles of the rotator cuff. By performing this exercise horizontally, you negate the effects of gravity that usually assist the movement when standing, ensuring the cuff does the heavy lifting rather than the larger deltoids. Strengthening these stabilizers is essential for improving shoulder tracking and preventing common injuries like impingement or labral tears. It is a staple in physical therapy because it provides a high level of muscle activation with relatively low stress on the joint capsule.

How to Perform the Exercise:
1. Set the Foundation: Lie on your side on a flat surface with your hips and knees slightly bent for stability. Place a small rolled-up towel between your upper arm and your ribcage to keep your shoulder properly aligned and prevent “cheating” with your lats.
2. The Starting Position: Bend your top elbow to a 90-degree angle, resting your forearm across your stomach while holding a very light dumbbell (or just the weight of your hand to start).
3. The Rotation: Keeping your elbow pinned firmly against the towel, slowly rotate your forearm upward toward the ceiling until it is parallel with the floor or slightly higher.
4. The Control: Pause for a second at the top of the movement, then slowly lower the weight back to the starting position; the eccentric (lowering) phase is just as important for building strength as the lift itself.
5. Try to perform 3 sets of 10 repetitions, 3-5x/week
