New (old) space! New class! I’m excited to launch a new in-person Level 2 class on Fridays at 10:30am at the Iyengar Institute of New York, 150 West 22nd Street, New York, NY.

Once the basic foundation is learned, Level 1 standing poses are deeply familiar and Sarvangasana can be held for at least 5 minutes, students move onto Level 2. This includes, refines and expands upon what was taught in Level 1. Sirsasana (headstand), Full Arm Balance, and Backbends are all introduced. Deeper twistings and forward extensions and variations in the familiar Shoulderstand are explored.

In each asana we must stabilize some parts of the body so that we can find mobility in others. Mobility frees up stiffness, and stability strengthens weakness. In this workshop we will explore the interplay of both.

Start the year by fostering vigor and resilience as we explore approaches to the variations of Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose) and Virasana (Hero Pose).
The warrior Virabhadra is mentioned in the ancient Indian poem Kumarasambhava. B.K.S. Iyengar writes that "Virabhadrasana, the asana that bears the name of this powerful warrior, has three forms. These three postures exude the dynamism of the character of their namesake. They energise and revitalise not only the practitioner, but also the onlooker."
Iyengar also writes that "Virasana is one of the most important asanas." It "helps to achieve stability" and "helps to build the courage and will to fight our daily battles."
During the workshop we will explore approaches to these poses that make them more accessible and increase understanding of their shapes and actions.
