Happy New Year! I had big plans for the beginning of 2026. I did a burnout audit, picked my word for the year, set up my planner, and prepped the kids to go back to school. 😅 I thought I had it all under control until …

It started with a little sore throat on NYE. We were having friends over for a casual get together New Year’s Day. When I woke up my husband took one look at me and told me we had to cancel and he hadn’t seen me look that bad EVER!😱 After that it was rest and meds feel better then worse and more rest.

I decided to embrace it and pamper myself with all the fun gifts Santa brought me and did my red light mask and eye masks while sipping tea and binging shows or sleeping because my head aches were so bad I couldn’t focus to read.

Sometimes you just need to put yourself first so you can get back to where you need to be. My clients, my children, and my husband all understood and were supportive. What will you do for self

Being home during a long winter break can actually be a huge opportunity for speech and language growth. With fewer transitions, less rushing, and more time together, kids often feel more regulated and engaged. Short, natural moments of connection throughout the day can make a big impact without feeling like “extra work.”

Here are 9 easy speech therapy ideas you can do at home—>

Read:
Repetition helps children learn new words and sentence structures. Pause to label pictures, model short phrases, and talk about what’s happening in the story.

Narrate:
Winter break means more time at home, which is perfect for language-rich routines like cooking, getting dressed, or playing. Use short, simple models like “cut apple,” “pour milk,” or “all done.”

Offer choices:
Instead of yes/no questions, give two options. “Do you want the red sweater or the blue one?” This naturally encourages expressive language.

Play with bubbles:
Great for requesting, turn-taking, and joint attention. Model words like “more,” “again,” “pop,” and “help.”

Sing:
Songs are regulating and predictable. Pause before key words to encourage your child to fill in the blank.

Use toys:
Animals, cars, or dolls are perfect for modeling verbs like eat, sleep, go, jump, and stop.

Expand:
If your child says “snow,” you can say “big snow” or “snow falling.” These small expansions build language without pressure.

Play:
Winter break play should feel fun, not like school. Model language instead of asking constant questions.

Follow:
With fewer schedules and demands, let your child choose the activity. Talking about what they’re already interested in leads to more meaningful communication.

The holidays can be exciting and overwhelming for kids and parents. A few small shifts can go a long way:

✨ Less is more
Use fewer words with visual supports.
Short phrases, gestures, pictures, or pointing help children understand without overload.
Instead of: “Go say hi, ask how they’re doing, and show them your new toy,”
Try: “Hi Grandma,” wave 👉 point to toy.

✨ Talk about what’s next
Preview transitions to reduce stress.
“First we eat, then we open presents.”
“After this house, we’re going home.”
Knowing what’s coming helps kids feel safe and regulated.

✨ Manage expectations
Your child doesn’t need to perform or be “on.”
It’s okay if they don’t say thank you perfectly, answer every question, or stay the whole time.
Model language, step in when needed, and prioritize connection.

Holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful 🤍

Ever wonder if your child would benefit from myofunctional therapy?

Myofunctional therapy treats Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) which are habits or muscle patterns that affect how your child uses their tongue, lips, and face. They impact speech, breathing, chewing, and swallowing.

Red flags your child may benefit from myofunctional therapy:
• Mouth breathing
• Tongue thrust or “forward” swallow
• Open-mouth posture
• Messy eating or trouble chewing
• Snoring or noisy breathing
• Difficulty making certain speech sounds
• Long-term pacifier or thumb-sucking habits
• Drooling beyond toddler years

At Small Steps Speech, we help strengthen and retrain the muscles so kids can speak, breathe, and eat more comfortably. 💛 Interested in hearing more, use the link in our bio to learn more.

Winter activities are full of opportunities to build language at home. Here are a few easy ways to support communication while staying warm:

• Snow gear vocabulary: Talk through each item as your child gets dressed:hat, gloves, zipper, boots.
•Sequence it: Ask “What do we put on first?” to practice sequencing and expressive language.
• Winter sensory bin: Use cotton balls, toy animals, and scoops to work on pretend play

Action words: scoop, pour, hide

Nouns: snow, polar bear, penguin, shovel.
• Hot cocoa conversations: Take turns stirring, pouring, and describing: “warm,” “sweet,” “mix,” “more.”

Simple routines turn into big learning moments. Try these small steps all winter long.

What an incredible time at ASHA 2025! ✨
I’m home feeling so grateful — for learning, connection, community, and time with my favorite people.

From inspiring sessions… to meaningful conversations… to friendships old and new… this week reminded me why I love the work we do. 💖

And exploring DC with my little family made the trip even sweeter.
Small steps → big changes. 💙
