March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to recognize the contributions, talents, and rights of people with disabilities—and to recommit ourselves to building communities in New York where those with complex needs or housing insecurity can achieve fulfilling, dignified, safe, and healthy lives.

At CP Unlimited, this month is about meaningful awareness and action. For 80 years, the organization has stood alongside the people we support, providing critical services that empower them to live independently, pursue meaningful work, express themselves creatively, and fully experience their community. From housing and vocational services to Article 16 therapies, creative arts, and advocacy efforts, CPU remains grounded in respect and care.

March is also National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, a period when we remember our history as an Agency founded by a group of parents who were committed, like us today, to promoting equity in health and accessibility. That 2026 marks our eighth decade doing this important work shows us how far we have come and how the concerns of yesterday inform all we do.

CP Unlimited is proud to support thousands of New Yorkers each year, enlarging our umbrella of service while sharing resources and expertise.

Together with our friends and partners, we ensure that people with disabilities are not only seen—but valued, supported, and inspired every day of the year.

“Today I want to focus on gratitude- gratitude for the care, attention, and advocacy my sister receives at Graci residence. …the recent improvements have made Graci a more comfortable and welcoming home…it means so much to see that level of heart poured into the place where our loved ones live,” said Vesna Okolisan whose sister has been at Graci since its opening in 1980.

Staff and persons supported welcomed New York State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (District 23) on Friday, February 13 as she presented a check representing generous funding for CP Unlimited’s M.O.V.E. (Mobility Opportunities via Education/Experience) program at the Cora Hoffman Center on Staten Island.

“I am proud to have secured $250,000 for CP Unlimited’s M.O.V.E. program to expand accessibility within their facilities. This support ensures all individuals have spaces suited to their needs addressing the inequities that those with disabilities face,” said Scarcella-Spanton.

The transformative, activity-based program helps individuals acquire the motor skills needed for sitting, standing, walking and transitioning with the aid of specialized equipment and Direct Care support. There are currently 15 participants benefiting from M.O.V.E. on Staten Island, with each taking literal steps towards better health, mobility, and socialization. CPU is the only organization in New York to offer M.O.V.E. to adults.
