Picture your ankle joint as a sophisticated hinge that connects your foot to your leg, enabling various movements such as walking, running, and jumping. However, when this joint becomes damaged due to conditions like arthritis, injury, or deformity, it can lead to debilitating pain and limited mobility. That’s where ankle arthrodesis comes into play. At Complete Orthopedics we can essentially fuse the bones in your ankle joint together to alleviate pain.
During ankle arthrodesis, one of our surgeons will remove any damaged cartilage from the surfaces of the ankle joint. Then, they will carefully position the bones in the ankle joint so that they are aligned correctly. Next, the surgeon uses screws, plates, or rods to hold the bones in place while they heal. Over time, the bones fuse together, creating a stable and rigid structure.
