Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to facilitate a workshop entitled Understanding and Addressing Burnout for TakeRoot Justice, a consortium of non-profit organizations that provide legal assistance and advocacy for some of the most marginalized and oppressed people in NYC. Burnout is a problem in many fields, but nonprofit professionals are at even higher risk of burnout. Staff from a few of the different organizations came together to learn more about what causes burnout and what to do to address it, individually and organizationally. I was happy to have the chance to provide some helpful information. Post-workshop conversation and evaluation data showed it was well received. One of the organizations has even contacted me about potentially facilitating another workshop during their retreat this fall. So thankful.

This was my first in-person workshop for CL2 Mental Health Services. My first in-person workshop as an independent mental health consultant. I’ve delivered many workshops for the various organizations I’ve worked for, but this one was for my own business! Grateful for that opportunity. Grateful to have had my family there with me. Thankful for my wife for her love and support. Grateful for Morrison my motivation. Hopefully, this is the first of many workshops as I continue to grow my brand, my business, and my ability to help people the way that I can and the way that I want to. Continued growth. Onward and upward.

Introducing CL2 Mental Health Services.

Check the link in my bio to learn more about my private practice and share it with folks. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

A lil over a year ago, a couple reached out to me looking for a therapist for their son. They said they were referred to me by a colleague I used to work with.

Stuff like this happened over the years. People reached out to me looking for a therapist. I took a few folks here and there, but never too many, never for too long. Though trained as a therapist, it wasn’t something I was ready to commit to fully. I was always looking for other ways to use my social work and mental health training.

Over the last few years, I realized that the need for Black (male) mental health practitioners was so strong. I started becoming more open to being a therapist. I didn’t make a move, though, mainly because of my fear of vicarious trauma and some of my stuff that I hadn’t processed.

My friends, from the mental health realm and otherwise, encouraged me, saying I’d be a great therapist. My mentor answered questions about what to do in sessions and with my own business. My therapist said it was a good idea and that it would help me with my trauma and healing.

But it wasn’t until that call from that couple that I decided it was time to start my private practice. They asked if I had a website where they could read more about me. I didn’t, but I told them I’d put something together.

CL2 Mental Health Services was born. Here I am, a lil over a year later. I’m somebody’s therapist, a few folks, actually. It’s going well. I’m proud that I’m able to help my people heal. I’ve also been able to lead workshops, help organizations with workplace mental health strategy, and soon I’ll launch some groups for dads. The possibilities are so strong. Onward and upward.
