Congratulations to this year's graduates of Samaritan Daytop Village's Leadership Academy!

Over the past 10 weeks, 12 employees completed our agency-led professional development program, culminating in this week's Capstone Challenge presentations.

Graduates were celebrated by members of the Executive Team, including four who served as mentors. The event also featured Karen Carlini, Associate Executive Director of Dynamic Youth Community (Dynamite Youth Center), and a keynote address from the Samaritan Daytop Village Board Chair Bernie Kaplan.

A big thank you to our Professional Development & Training Department for another outstanding program -- and congratulations to this year’s Capstone Challenge winners!

We are honored to be selected as a presenter for the NASW NYS Chapter Continuing Education Conference 2026, taking place on May 29, at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College.

This year’s theme, "One New York, One Voice: Reimagining Social Work for a Just Future," centers equity, justice, and collective power across our profession.

Our session is titled, “SOLAR: An Academic–Practice Partnership to Build an Equity-Driven Addiction & Recovery Leadership Pipeline.” The presentation will highlight the SOLAR (Social Work Opportunities for Leadership in Addiction and Recovery) program we developed in partnership with (SBU). Attendees will learn how to adapt core SOLAR elements to their own organizations and gain the tools to replicate the innovative work/academic initiative.

SOLAR provides frontline and mid-level social services staff with a pathway toward a Master's Degree in Social Work. Samaritan Daytop Village and Stony Brook University worked together to design the SOLAR program, which combines academic classes, a work-compatible internship, and mentorships.

Kudos to the presenters and developers of SOLAR: SBU School of Social Welfare Associate Clinical Professor and Director of Online Education Melissa J. Earle, and Samaritan Daytop Village's VP of Residential Treatment and Recovery Services Jim Hollywood and AVP of Residential Treatment Harry Scott.

The conference is offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual options. We hope you’ll join us.

Former NBA player Mike Sweetney returned to our Daytop Preparatory School in Huntington Station to speak with our students about mental health.

From his time with the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls to his experiences with depression and food addiction, Mike spoke candidly with students about his journey. Now a mental health awareness counselor with New Horizon Counseling Center, he draws on his lived experience to support others and raise awareness around mental health.

Thank you, Mike, for taking the time to speak with our students and share your life lessons and advice.

📣No more partial justice for essential work! We call on our leaders in Albany to human services workers wages that keep up with inflation, while also committing to true wage equity.

The first step is clear: The Governor must align with the Legislature and include a 4% investment or more for all human services programs in this year’s budget. Next, we need policies that support long-term pay parity for the 800,000 human services workers who strengthen New York every day.

We’re deeply grateful to the JKW Live Well Foundation for awarding a $25,000 grant to support students at the Daytop Preparatory School in Huntington Station.

The foundation, established in memory of Joseph Keenan Walser — a young man lost to fentanyl poisoning — was created by a family with firsthand understanding of the importance of supporting young people on their recovery journeys.

This funding will expand music and technology programming at the school, introducing DJing and music production as well as robotics and coding instruction using LEGO-based technology.

The Daytop Preparatory School serves adolescents ages 15–19 who have struggled in traditional school settings due to substance use disorder, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Thanks to the JKW Live Well Foundation’s generosity, students will have new opportunities to explore their creativity, build new skills, and stay engaged in school.
