New York City Will Hospitalize More Mentally Ill People Involuntarily
What appears to be a well-intended measure is likely to have catastrophic results for our community.
Hospitals are already overcrowded and understaffed.
People struggling with mental illness need comprehensive services and their basic needs met. Housing, education, outpatient services, etc.
New York City Will Hospitalize More Mentally Ill People Involuntarily
Mayor Eric Adams directed the police and emergency medical workers to hospitalize people who appear to be severely mentally ill, even if they pose no threat to others.

Highly recommended! A much needed critique on misogyny in the field
The Patient Gloria Review. Psychotherapy as Misogyny in Ph***ic Fringe Theater
“The Patient Gloria” is inspired (if that’s the right word) by a film that some see as a breakthrough; others as a betrayal. In 1964, a recently divorced woman named Gloria Szymanski consented…

Tis’ the season to remind yourself to take ALL YOUR PTO before the end of the year (if you can’t roll it over to next year).
In 2021, Americans had 9.5 unused vacation days by the end of the year.
Rest is not a luxury. It’s a human right and a basic need. You are not “lazy” for wanting to take time off. This is the same discourse that values productivity over wellbeing.
We should be working to live, not living to work. Therapy should not aim at producing functional and productive humans, but at helping them become the most authentic and wholesome version of themselves.
So… how will you be enjoying your hard earned PTO? Drop me a comment!

Dear Cis Analysts — Parapraxis

"The place of the T in LBGT has always been a contested one. Ours is a difference that’s different. Gay and le***an organizations abandon us when it’s expedient. Trans people have had to organize for ourselves. Trans women have had to organize for ourselves. What Julia Serano called “trans-misogyny” is a very particular flavor of weaponized panic that has the power to limit or end our lives. Particularly trans women of color, or those who have been abandoned by family and community, denied housing, trapped in the cycles of incarceration—it’s killing my sisters."

What qualities does a person need to have to be a good psychoanalyst?
"One of the most important things has to be, to be somebody who is really interested in other people. In how they work, what it's like being a human being. And is really interested in other people's ways of being a human being. Not just, how well can I understand somebody, but, how interesting that they're so different from me. That kind of loving engagement with other people's differences, I think, is a terribly important quality."
- Michael Parsons.

When clinging to old hopes gets in the way of healing and growth | Aeon Essays
"Through these experiences, Alex and I started to understand that his unyielding hope served him to avoid experiencing the overwhelming pain of disappointment and loss. He was employing what the psychoanalyst Martha Stark has called ‘relentless hope’, a defence against the unbearable pain of grief. Hope got in the way of healing and growth by impeding Alex’s movement through mourning. Trauma experts such as Judith Herman consider this a crucial stage of trauma recovery. For her, people who experience psychological trauma ‘must mourn the loss of the foundation of basic trust, the belief in a good parent. As they come to recognise that they were not responsible for their fate, they confront the existential despair that they could not face in childhood.’"
When clinging to old hopes gets in the way of healing and growth | Aeon Essays
Hope is usually seen as a positive agent of change that spares us from pain. But it can also undermine healing and growth

A fragment of Mr. Luther King's Jr's speech during the APA's Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. 1967:
This couldn't be more relevant today:
"There are certain technical words in every academic discipline which soon become stereotypes and even clichés. Every academic discipline has its technical nomenclature. You who are in the field of psychology have given us a great word. It is the word maladjusted. This word is probably used more than any other word in psychology. It is a good word; certainly it is good that in dealing with what the word implies you are declaring that destructive maladjustment should be destroyed. You are saying that all must seek the well-adjusted life in order to avoid neurotic and schizophrenic personalities.
"...But on the other hand, I am sure that we will recognize that there are some things in our society, some things in our world, to which we should never be adjusted. There are some things concerning which we must always be maladjusted if we are to be people of good will. We must never adjust ourselves to racial discrimination and racial segregation. We must never adjust ourselves to religious bigotry. We must never adjust ourselves to economic conditions that take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few. We must never adjust ourselves to the madness of militarism, and the self-defeating effects of physical violence."
