Today, March 20, marks the spring equinox. On this day light and darkness - day and night are equal and it heralds the reawakening of the earth. For the ancient Celts, it also marked the start of a new cycle.
When we were in Ireland in March of 2023, we visited the Neolithic monuments Loughcrew (Cairn T), and Knowth which precisely align with the spring equinox.
These megalithic structures represent a sophisticated understanding of astronomy and a deep connection to the rhythms of nature. They may have served as ceremonial sites to honor the changing seasons and ensure a bountiful harvest.
The equinox symbolizes renewal, fertility, and the triumph of light over darkness, marking a time of transition and transformation.
I chose the Spiral as my logo because of these ancient monuments. It is a symbol that shows up all over the globe during this ancient period in human history.
They may have represented solar and lunar cycles, a path from outer consciousness to inner enlightenment, or the portal to a spirit world. Some associate them with the feminine divine and shamanic trances as a person transitions to another realm.
The carvings are located both on the exterior and interior stones of the passage tombs.
🛠️ They were created using stone tools to pick, peck, grind, or incise the designs into the rock surfaces.
We encountered them on the south slope of Sliabh na Cailleach - the hill of the Cailleach, or Loughcrew. (The photo of me crouching.)
They can be found within the chambers of the mounds and we found them on the Hag’s Chair (Cailleach’s chair) outside Cairn T. (I’m standing in front of it in the images below).
If you haven’t already read my last blog post about the Crone (or hag) Caillech, go to the link in the bio and enjoy the read.
