DUTCH TEST - Functional Medicine Test for Stress, Severe Fatigue and Mental Health

One of my functional medicine patients experienced intense stress from work and her relationship with her partner, along with severe fatigue.

She struggled to fall asleep before 2 or 3 am, often holding her phone until she unintentionally fell asleep with it in hand. Despite feeling exhausted upon waking, her primary and OBGYN doctors were more focused on her declining s*x hormone levels than her chronic fatigue and low energy.

In the first picture,her morning saliva cortisol levels were extremely high, reflecting her struggle to cope with anticipated challenges and stress with work with her partner.

In the second picture, you can see her neurotransmitter metabolite results, indicating emotional repression and depression, with imbalances in dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine levels.

I always advise my patients to trust what they see rather than dismissing their stress and depression. Your body gives signals, but we often ignore them until they manifest as disease.

"A Personal Journey and Proactive Health Strategies"

I've experienced times when I easily succumbed to fatigue, making it easier for me to empathize with patients. Nights were a struggle for me, and the morning chirping of birds, typically a sign of a fresh start, became a stress-inducing reminder for me to wake up my tired body.

Looking back, it's astonishing how I managed that lifestyle, perhaps because I was a few years younger. In youth, the adrenal glands support our bodies, allowing adaptation even in stressful situations. However, at my current age, neglecting my body means it won't recover as efficiently.

To aid my body's recovery, I've incorporated certain habits:

1. Healthy Eating Habits: I replaced breakfast with a easily digestible vegetable smoothie, lunch includes whole grain bread and a vegetable salad, and dinner is a substantial meal if possible.

2. Nutritional Supplements: Despite not being a meat enthusiast, or even high-carb based diet, I take a blood sugar-lowering agent containing chromium with meals. A recent DNA test highlighted a risk of type 2 diabetes, reinforcing the need for caution. Mitochondrial support supplements, rich in B vitamins and specific amino acids, stimulate cell energy production.

3. Quality Sleep: I'm working on falling asleep promptly, despite being a night owl. Occasionally, I use a small amount of melatonin to ensure adequate rest. It's crucial for those with chronic fatigue, many of whom struggle to sleep at night.

4. Moderate Exercise: Incorporating moderate strength training or aerobic exercise is vital. It helps release tension and toxins, benefiting overall health and countering the physical toll of stress.

¡Hola! Hoy hablemos de algo importante: las luchas con el peso que enfrentan muchas mujeres.

Imagina esforzarte mucho por perder peso, pero simplemente no baja. A veces, no se trata solo de comer bien y hacer ejercicio; podría haber otras razones.

En nuestra clínica, hemos visto mujeres que no pueden perder peso incluso cuando toman medicamentos para la tiroides. A pesar de pruebas normales, sus cuerpos siguen teniendo un metabolismo lento, lo que les hace ganar peso.

¿Y sabes qué? Hemos notado otro patrón. Algunas mujeres aumentan de peso debido a tres cosas: demasiado DHEA, insulina y estrógeno. Estas son hormonas importantes, pero cuando están muy altas juntas, causan problemas de peso, además de otros problemas.

Are your Hormones causing Weight Gain ?

"Hi there! Let's talk about something important today: weight struggles that many women face. Imagine trying hard to lose weight, but it just won't budge. Sometimes, it's not just about eating right and exercising; there could be other reasons.

In our clinic, we've seen some women who can't lose weight even when they take medicine for their thyroid. Despite normal tests, their bodies still struggle with a slow metabolism, making them gain weight.

And guess what? We noticed another pattern. Some women gain weight because of these three things: too much of DHEA, insulin, and estrogen. These are important hormones, but when they're too high together, they cause weight problems, in addition to other issues.

Let me give you an example: a woman in her thirties had a big cyst in her uterus, which meant too much estrogen. Also, her thyroid wasn't working well. She had irregular periods, bad period pains, and acne on her face, in addition to her weight gain.

She felt hot in the evenings, sometimes had a racing heart, shaky hands when studying, and low sugar levels. These are signs of too much insulin.

Sometimes, this could mean the body is tired or making too much insulin, and checking hormones can help. We use DUTCH tests to find these issues.

Let's understand why this happens: stress is a big reason. When you're stressed, some hormones get too high and some get too low. Stress also makes it harder for your body to use insulin, which makes you crave sugary foods more.

Also, things around us, like plastic or paint, can mess up our hormones if we're exposed to them a lot. So, if you're struggling with weight because of stress or other things around you, finding out why and getting help early is important. Changing what you eat, managing stress, and avoiding things that harm your body are key steps.

Últimamente, mis conversaciones con pacientes se han centrado en las glándulas suprarrenales y las complicaciones derivadas de su disfunción. La mayoría de los visitantes de nuestra clínica son mujeres de veinte a cuarenta años, y hoy, mi objetivo es ofrecer un mensaje más informativo a través de este blog.

Exploraremos métodos para manejar y prevenir la fatiga suprarrenal.

Inicialmente, las hormonas de la corteza suprarrenal se pueden clasificar en dos tipos principales: DHEA, crucial para hormonas generales como las hormonas s*xuales, y cortisol, que funciona de manera similar a un esteroide corticoide. Estas hormonas interactúan a través de bucles de retroalimentación, regulando su liberación.

Por lo general, al despertar por la mañana, tanto los niveles de DHEA como los de cortisol son altos, habiendo sido producidos durante la noche. Lately, my discussions with patients have centered around the adrenal glands and the complications stemming from their dysfunction. Most of our clinic visitors are women in their twenties to forties, and today, I aim to offer a more informative message through this blog.

Let's explore methods for managing and preventing adrenal fatigue.

Initially, hormones from the adrenal cortex can be categorized into two main types: DHEA, crucial for general hormones like s*x hormones, and cortisol, functioning akin to a corticoid steroid. These hormones interact through feedback loops, regulating their release.

Typically, upon waking in the morning, both DHEA and cortisol levels are high, having been produced overnight. These hormones continue to function throughout the day, protecting against oxidative stress, regulating various hormones, curbing inflammation, and upholding immune function.

However, individuals grappling with adrenal fatigue often experience significant morning fatigue due to notably low DHEA and cortisol levels. As the day progresses and activity increases, proper adrenal gland function becomes essential. Yet, for those with adrenal fatigue, the glands activate slowly, resulting in adequate adrenal hormone levels only by evening.

Regrettably, by this point, it's already too late. If this cycle persists, adrenal function deteriorates throughout the day, leading to increased tension and sleep disturbances at night. Individuals with low adrenal function primarily require cortisol and DHEA. Severe cases might benefit from direct hormone administration and amino acids like DHEA. Additionally, vitamin C is vital as it enhances adrenal hormone utilization by activating DHEA.

Specific nutrients play pivotal roles; among them, activated forms of vitamin B5, B6, and particularly vitamin B9 (folic acid) are critical. The amino acid tyrosine is equally vital, serving as a precursor to dopamine. Chronic tyrosine deficiency makes the body highly susceptible to certain stress types, resulting in deficiencies in dopamine and adrenaline, ultimately leading to a condition known as catecholamine deficiency in the adrenal gland. This can manifest as chronic fatigue in younger individuals and conditions like ADHD, or in older individuals, diseases such as Parkinson's.

Hence, adrenal gland dysfunction due to tyrosine deficiency could significantly impact overall human function. Furthermore, magnesium proves beneficial in reducing tension and easing fatigue. Moreover, issues like leaky gut, liver detoxification, and low thyroid function closely correlate with adrenal fatigue. Addressing these concerns can bring improvements for those facing challenges in these areas.

Adrenal glands are significantly affected by chronic fatigue syndrome. Therefore, it's crucial for individuals experiencing chronic fatigue to evaluate their adrenal function.

Prevention of Skin Aging

To delay skin aging, it is crucial to avoid physical and mental exhaustion. Both physical and mental stress can disrupt collagen synthesis, leading to a loss of skin elasticity. Prolonged periods of exhaustion can also result in adrenal insufficiency, leading to symptoms such as darkening of the complexion and under-eye area. Additionally, a deficiency in essential nutrients and antioxidants (such as selenium) can lead to premature aging.

It is important to stay informed. Reduce carbohydrate intake and incorporate a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits rich in antioxidants, along with fish, seafood, omega-3 oils, coconut oil, avocado, and nuts into your diet. Also, maintaining good nutritional status is essential, so it is recommended to take a comprehensive vitamin supplement.

Natural Remedies

Lycopene: Lycopene, found in various foods including tomatoes, is an antioxidant along with beta-carotene, and is rich in components beneficial for the skin. A study exposed individuals' arms to three times the amount of UV rays needed to induce redness. While the beta-carotene content in the tested area remained unchanged, the concentration of lycopene decreased by 31-46%. This suggests that lycopene provides protection against UV-induced skin damage, and having an ample amount of lycopene can delay skin aging caused by sun exposure.

Antioxidants: Some studies have shown an increase in skin thickness and density when various antioxidants are consumed. In an experiment conducted over 12 weeks, 39 individuals with healthy skin were divided into three groups, each taking different types of supplements. The first group took lycopene, lutein, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and selenium. The second group had the same supplements as the first group but with double the amount of lycopene and no lutein. The third group received a placebo. The results showed significant increases in skin thickness and density in the first and second groups, while no changes were observed in the third group.

DHEA: In a clinical trial, healthy elderly individuals who took 50mg of DHEA daily reported improved skin health. When 280 healthy elderly individuals took DHEA at a dose of 50mg per day for one year, significant improvements were observed in skin moisture, thickness, sebum levels, and pigmentation compared to the group taking a placebo. Furthermore, these effects were more pronounced in women."

I've been exploring into the world of Functional Medicine for about a decade now. Initially, I didn't use the term 'Functional Medicine' in my practice. Instead, I started with treatments focused on vitamins and lifestyle management. Over time, I broadened my perspective and thinking towards Functional Medicine.

Even today, many people aren't familiar with the term. Functional Medicine is also referred to as 'Complementary Medicine' or 'Alternative Medicine'. If I were to define Functional Medicine in a sentence, I'd say this: imagine the symptoms a patient presents with as the fruits of a tree. The reason for these fruits lies in the roots. Functional Medicine involves identifying the primary causes that lead to the development of a disease and guiding the patient towards treatments that target these causes.

Contrastingly, pharmaceutical treatments, which dominate mainstream medicine, often lean more towards symptom management rather than addressing root causes. For instance, the medication you take for high blood pressure doesn't treat the underlying cause of elevated blood pressure but simply lowers vascular pressure. So, when you stop taking the medication, the blood pressure rises again. The same goes for diabetes medication. Instead of addressing the reasons and causes that lead to elevated blood sugar levels, it artificially lowers blood sugar.

Metabolic disorders require a shift in lifestyle for effective treatment. However, due to the convenience of regulating them with medication, many patients prefer this over making the effort to change.

In my practice, I continue to experience various miracles that are hard to explain. Moving away from the traditional reliance solely on medication, and instead, effectively utilizing the functions of the 100 doctors within the human body, Functional Medicine empowers patients to harness their own healing potential. Candidiasis, arising from the abnormal growth of the Candida albicans fungus, can give rise to a spectrum of issues throughout the body.
