A decade ago, genome sequencing revealed a big surprise: about 50 percent of human cancers are linked to mutations in what are known as epigenetic regulators, which control the activity of genes.

In a new study in Cell Chemical Biology, a team of scientists led by Oliver Bell from USC and Stephen V. Frye from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill developed a new drug-like molecule that can counteract the effects of mutated epigenetic regulators, which are known to drive certain types of cancer including lymphoma.

According to Science Daily, the research team set out to design a drug-like molecule to reverse the cancer-causing gene repression.

Scientists at the Baylor College of Medicine have now developed an innovative strategy that promises the ability for early diagnosis of schizophrenia. Computational strategy analyzes specific regions of the human genome using a machine learning algorithm called SPLS-DA.
The researchers used blood samples to profile DNA methyl (CH3) groups — a type of epigenetic marker — that differ between people diagnosed with schizophrenia and normal individuals. Based on this profile, the authors developed a model that can assess an individual’s chances of having schizophrenia.

Nanomedicine, a promising area of biotechnologies, is the application of nanomaterials, or nanoparticles, to medicine. Nanoparticles are a form of transport for drugs and can go places drugs wouldn’t be able to go on their own.
A nanometre (nm) is one-billionth of a meter. Nanoparticles used for drug delivery are usually in the 20 to the 100-nanometre range, although this can vary depending on the design of the nanoparticle.
Nanoparticles can be engineered and designed to package and transport drugs directly to where they’re needed. This targeted approach means the drugs cause the most harm in the particular, and intended, area of the tumor they are delivered to. This minimizes collateral damage to surrounding healthy tissues, and therefore the side effects.

Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers say they have added to evidence that the compound farnesol, found naturally in herbs, berries, and fruits prevents and reverses brain damage linked to Parkinson's disease.
The compound, used in flavorings and perfume-making, can prevent the loss of neurons that produce dopamine in the brains of mice by deactivating PARIS, a key protein involved in the disease's progression. Loss of such neurons affects movement and cognition, leading to hallmark symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as tremors, muscle rigidity, confusion, and dementia.
Farnesol's ability to block PARIS, say the researchers, could guide the development of new Parkinson's disease interventions that specifically target this protein.

Now, scientists have identified nearly 300 gene variations that influence the reproductive lifespan in women. Additionally, they have successfully manipulated several key genes associated with these variants to extend their reproductive lifespan.
