🍎πŸ₯•πŸ₯What is a cross-reaction and how does it relate to Oral Allergy Syndrome/OAS or Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome/PFAS?πŸ’πŸπŸ…

Certain fruits and vegetables may cause an itchy mouth and swelling of the throat, lips, and tongue. This can often be confused for a food allergy, but it is actually a contact allergic reaction caused by foods which contain proteins similar to pollen.

A cross-reaction essentially means that your immune system is confused- it thinks that you are eating trees and pollen that you are normally allergic to, which leads to a reaction. The reaction can range from itching of the mouth to more severe reactions like anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can occur and is more common with those affected with OAS to peanuts and treenuts.

Symptoms of OAS may be more severe during the springtime, as this is when spring allergies are at their peak.

Like any allergy, OAS may appear spontaneously. To determine if you are suffering from OAS or a food allergy, you may wish to consult with an allergist who will perform skin testing or lab work.

Our team at Allergy MD is here to discuss any concerns you may have about food and seasonal allergies, and will help you manage your allergies while still maintaining a healthy diet.

Are you reluctant to apply makeup because you’re afraid you’ll break out in a rash, your eyes will start watering, or your skin will get red and itchy? These are all signs of having an allergic reaction to cosmetics. Makeup is a hard thing to give up in its entirety, and reasonably so - it’s what makes us more confident and feel more beautiful. The good news is that at Allergy MD, we offer patch testing which is a simple test that reveals what allergens commonly found in cosmetics you are allergic to. The patch test is done in 3 office visits, the first in which the patches are applied on your skin. The second office visit is 48 hours later, and involves removing the patches and evaluating the skin. Finally, the third office visit occurs 72 hours after the first visit, where you and a doctor will sit down and discuss which allergens you are allergic to, and how to avoid them. Having a list of allergens and selecting products that lack these can save you time and money, as you no longer have to purchase new products to see which one works best for you.

πŸ’ If you have ever experienced an itchy rash on your finger, neck, or ear where a piece of jewelry was placed, you may have concluded that you have an allergic reaction to jewelry. This type of reaction is termed contact dermatitis, which can be pretty painful and may last for days or weeks. The most common metal allergy is Nickel, which is why some pieces of jewelry may be labeled as β€œNickel-free” or β€œGold-plated Nickel''. The simplest way to address jewelry allergies is to avoid any that cause irritation or contain Nickel and choose jewelry that only contain Gold.
πŸ’ You can buy products that also can detect Nickel on items. If detected, you can apply a solution to protect yourself from the Nickel.
πŸ’ You may have also seen your skin turn green after wearing a piece of jewelry for a long period of time. This is a common observation after wearing jewelry that contains a large amount of copper or nickel. Copper is especially known to react with your skin and sweat, resulting in a green color.
