Venous disorders and varicose veins can affect anyone — actresses, supermodels, and athletes included.
Some 22 million women between the ages of 40 and 80 in the U.S. have been diagnosed with varicose veins, those rope-like lines of blue or purple veins that run along the legs, thighs, and ankles. Given the prevalence of varicose veins among women, it’s no surprise that the condition — and related vein health conditions — strikes celebrities and non-celebrities alike.
When actresses, singers, and athletes get varicose veins, they deal not only with the discomfort, but also with the glare of the spotlight. Some well-known personalities, however, have been very open about how they’ve sought treatment for their varicose veins. With their honesty, they’ve encouraged others to do the same.
Four Celebrities Who’ve Been Treated for Varicose Veins
Though the circumstances of each case are different, all four of these famous women publicly acknowledged their varicose veins and addressed the condition with therapy.
Britney Spears. After this prolific pop star and former child actress had two children of her own, she developed varicose veins. Pregnancy is a common cause of varicose veins. The extra blood flow to the legs veins during pregnancy overextends the vein walls, causing the vein to protrude from under the skin. In 2012, Spears received treatment for her varicose veins and continues to perform in Las Vegas.
Serena Williams. Even world-class athletes can be affected by venous disorders. Tennis star Serena William reportedly suffered from blood clots after foot surgery in 2011, which led to a potentially-dangerous pulmonary embolism. Then, after giving birth in 2017, Williams had surgery to remove a hematoma, or a swelling of clotted blood, in her abdomen. Because of her history with blood clots, Williams has to be especially wary of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg that sometimes travels to the lungs.
Kristin Davis. Best known for playing Charlotte on the hit TV series, S*x and the City, Kristin Davis’s varicose veins were highlighted in paparazzi photos in 2008. Soon after, she reportedly had her varicose veins treated. It’s unknown what caused her varicose veins or if she had any risk factors such as a family history, but it is known that standing in heels can increase varicose vein risk; therefore, her hours spent filming may have played a role.
Emma Thompson. The star of Love Actually, Emma Thompson admitted she wore only long dresses to hide her varicose veins during public appearances. In 2006, she received treatment for her varicose veins, and returned to wearing stylish short dresses, telling the Daily Mail, “The dress is short and the legs are out on show. I had the varicose veins out this year and the scars are nearly healed, so the legs go out.”
