We often hear people say "have some empathy." Some individuals are confused with the difference between empathy and sympathy. Sympathy is understanding the other person's suffering from your own perspective. Empathy is connecting to the other person's feelings and understanding why they have these feelings. There are three types of empathy:

1️⃣ Cognitive Empathy - It is putting yourself in one's shoes and understanding why they feel the way they do.

2️⃣ Compassion empathy - being compassionate and have the ability to understand how they feel and take action on their behalf without letting your emotions take over.

3️⃣ Affective Empathy - having a shared emotional experience, feeling what the other is feeling.

Learning to be more empathetic helps us better co-exist and support our community.

All of the 8 dimensions of wellness are necessary to have a balanced and happy life. To experience optimal mental and physical health, all eight areas of your well-being must be healthy and nourished. They are all interconnected. Fulfilled in one place will affect other areas as well.

Wellness refers to your entire overall health, not just your physical health. Wellness is not only being free of disease, illness, or stressors but also having a purpose in life, being emotionally healthy and balanced, having positive involvement in your work and in your leisure time, and having meaningful relationships and happiness. To enjoy fulfilled and happy lives, it is important to take care of your well-being and invest time in your wellness.

What is mental well-being? It is a combination of psychological, emotional, and social health. It refers to how we move through life and react to its troubles. These fluctuations can range from everyday stressors to significant life changes.

Often, you will be faced with things out of your control and uncertainty. Your mental well-being shapes how you respond and handle the situation. When you have a healthy mental well-being, you are prepared to face the uncertainty with strength, and you will navigate through the turbulence easier.

Taking care of your mental well-being can improve emotional health and emotional well-being, including greater self-esteem and reduced anxiety.

Passion and motivation are twins. Passion is the game and motivation is never lacking. If you are experiencing inconsistent motivation, then chances are, you’re not living your passion.

There are ways to unwrap your passion:
❤️ Authenticity of oneself
❤️ Open-mindness, creative, and willing to learn
❤️ Shift your mindset
❤️ Build resilience
❤️ Create new routines and habits

"If you do not make conscious changes today, you will continue down the same path you’re on right now. Knock out the stuff that doesn’t matter to you, and replace it with more passion, joy, and adventure." - Karen Putz

FIRST TIME GETTING GOAL-ORIENTED THERAPY❓
If you have never been to therapy before, you’re probably wondering about what that first meeting with your therapist will be like. It’s virtually impossible in advance to describe precisely what to expect, as each client-specialist relationship is unique. However, it’s probably safe to say that your experience in therapy will hinge in great part on four critical factors. In reverse order of importance, these are:

1. The theoretical orientation (psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral therapy, etc.)
2. The personal style of the therapist you choose
3. Your attitude about your therapy
4. Your openness with your therapist

"Paying attention to our thoughts and behaviors in new ways is the cornerstone of this process. It can be challenging at times – sometimes, what we are experiencing is not particularly pleasant. It may be feelings we’ve resisted, thoughts we’ve tried to deny, or emotions that seem too overwhelming. However, the practice of observing, allowing, and feeling teaches us that emotions (those we deem pleasant, unpleasant, and everything in-between) are temporary. We have to give them space and work through them to move beyond them." - The Gateway to Solutions team.

Sometimes life throws curveballs, or you've experienced things that have triggered your behavior to change. Sometimes you want to grow as a person and be more in tune with your emotions. Maybe you want to heal from a trauma or a loss. Or something as easy as talking to someone outside your circle in confidence in a safe setting. Regardless of the reason, therapy helps. Therapy is not only for mental illness. Therapy can help you achieve your goals, enhance self-awareness, learn coping skills, or achieve your most authentic self. Forget the stigma about therapy because it is the one place that is all about you.

05/25/2022

In light of recent events, it is important to understand how to talk to your children for them to understand and face some of their fears. You do not want to overwhelm them with too much information. Here are some great tips for talking about violence:

✔️ Reaffirm safety: Emphasize schools are safe. Allow them to speak freely about their feelings and concerns.
✔️ Make time to talk - allow them to ask questions. The questions will guide the conversation and the information you share.
✔️ Keep explanations age-appropriate - Early elementary: simple information provided with reassurance and safety. Upper elementary/upper-middle: answer their questions and separate reality from fantasy. Upper middle / High school: Emphasize student safety and all resources for support.
✔️ Review safety procedures: Identify one adult at school and in the community they can go to if they feel threatened, scared, or at risk. Review the safety procedures in school and home settings.
✔️ Observe your child's emotional state: Take notice of any changes in behavior, appetite, or sleep patterns. It can indicate anxiety or stress. Seek help from a mental health professional for more intense reactions and behaviors.
✔️ Maintain a normal routine: Keep a regular routine and promote physical and mental health. Focus on schoolwork and extracurricular activities, and limit TV exposure and social media activity.

If you feel your child needs outside support, contact Gateway to Solutions and one of our mental health clinicians can help your child.
