OK people, this one is a deep dive into the weird world of biohacking and how it’s seeped deep into our consciousness about mental health and wellness. This archetype of what it means to be well is making everything worse.

I believe two things can be true – Social media have not singularly caused the youth mental health crisis (if only it were that simple) AND digital technology companies have made our lives worse.

When I take the first stance people assume I don’t take the second stance. Wrong. I wrote this piece back in 2018 and think it remains timely. https://tracydennistiwary.substack.com/p/why-is-any-of-this-a-surprise

I’m happy to report that the paperback of my book Future Tense: Why Anxiety is Good for You (Even Though it Feels Bad) is out. I’ve spent decades studying the causes and treatment of anxiety disorders. ADs exist and they’re debilitating. At the same time, the anxiety-as-disease story - the notion that all experiences of anxiety are pathological - is false. And this misunderstanding is directly harming us. The sole purpose of my book is to correct our misunderstanding of this essential emotion.

Do I sometimes feel like a PR person for anxiety? Yes, I do. But I think anxiety and a whole host of other negative emotions need to be reclaimed. That’s because mental health is not the absence of these difficult feelings. It’s the ability to have them, own them, feel them in good measure, and do something with them.

I almost never write about politics because I lack the expertise to do so. But as I have been trying to understand why the Dems lost, I realized that the answer in part lies in the concept of psychodrama. My diagnosis – the Democrats lost the script. My treatment plan – refocus on the true American narrative: Aspiration.

My latest Substack is near and dear to my heart – and opens with one of my favorite quotes. I’ve been writing a lot about friction lately – adding the right kinds to our lives. This applies to our emotions as well, and our kids’. We think that leaning into discomfort and difficulty – friction – will increase our suffering. But it does the opposite.

My latest Substack on why I think a rate-of-return analogy describes how the self-help industry is not only unhelpful for many of us - it’s downright counterproductive. It puts us in the zone of diminishing and negative returns. Just like over-plucking your eyebrows. Read on to see how…

In my latest Substack I focus on the important .s.surgeongeneral Advisory on parenting. You might’ve read that it’s telling us that parenting is hazardous for our health. Of course that’s not true. However, it is pointing out how much pressure is on us parents and that supporting parents must be a public health priority.

In my piece I wrote about how, paradoxically, the advice that we parents are seeking (and in my case doling out) has unfortunately become part of the problem.

But there are some things we can do…
