In asana yoga practice the first awareness we cultivate is body/mind awareness. This is why, after a good asana practice we feel taller, more put together, not so discombobulated.
Of course breath is always present and is ready to assist the body in asana action just like it assists in body movements in daily life. If we have to reach up high to get an object out of our normal reach, without any conscious effort, the breath with assist in the exertion. Even more obvious: if we suddenly run to cross a street or catch a subway, the breath will assist.
So, first thing we learn in asana practice concerning the breath is to NOT hold or control it. When the breath is not constrained it will follow the mind/body actions taking place in asanas. After a good amount of dedicated asana practice we practitioners start to feel more subtle aspects of the asanas. This includes awareness of breath. It is at this point in our practice we have the ability to cultivate breath awareness.
CULTIVATING BREATH AWARENESS is an entrance into a more subtle, less tangible, yet present aspect of asana practice.
