We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined and supported us at the 12th Annual “Walk to End Epilepsy” by The Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the Epilepsy Walk was a great success, highlighting the strength and unity of our epilepsy community.

A team from the Mount Sinai Epilepsy Center recently traveled to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to provide world-class epilepsy care to patients and advanced clinical training to local epilepsy specialists.

This year marked the 4th visit of Saadi Ghatan, MD (Neurosurgery), the 2nd visit of Sloane Sheldon, Ph.D., ABPP (Neuropsychology), and the 1st visit of Madeline Fields, MD (Neurology/Epilepsy) and several of our Mount Sinai fellows as a part of Virtue Foundation’s Mongolia Healthcare initiative and we’re deeply appreciative of their outstanding support and noble cause.

Over 2 weeks, they provided excellent epilepsy care, surgical services, and neuropsychological testing to local patients, collaborating closely with a committed team of local epileptologists, neurosurgeons and support staff.

We asked Dr. Sheldon, an expert in conducting neuropsychological assessments for individuals with various neurological disorders and specializes in epilepsy, about her experiences this year.

“During my first trip with the Virtue Foundation in 2023, my goal was to become oriented to the clinical practice in Mongolia and to understand what role I, and neuropsychology, could have,” says Dr. Sheldon. “This year, my goal was to really incorporate neuropsychology into the pre-surgical workup when needed. And it was a success, as we provided 20 patients (approx.) pre-surgical neuropsychological evaluations.”

During her first trip Dr. Sheldon had worked closely with Dr. Bayarmaa Dondov, a local epileptologist. Dr. Sheldon trained her in administering a Mongolian-adapted neuropsychological test, which she has been administering for the past year. For Dr. Sheldon, it was rewarding to see how quickly this practice was integrating into their surgical planning.

Dr. Sheldon is excited and looking forward to seeing Dr. Dondov continue to independently use these tools and have neuropsychology become more readily available for patients in Mongolia.
