Mount Sinai Epilepsy Program

Mount Sinai Epilepsy Program The Mount Sinai Epilepsy Center offers compassionate and comprehensive care for people with epilepsy Under the direction of Lara V. Marcuse, MD, and Madeline C.

Fields, MD, our epilepsy team consists of epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neurohospitalists, neuropsychologists, and other specialists, all of whom recognize the most important team member is you and your family. Working together, we make sure you receive compassionate, comprehensive care backed by leading-edge research. The Center’s team of outstanding specialists provides a state-of-the-art approach to the diagnosis and management of epilepsy. We believe that no person should be satisfied with ongoing seizures or unwanted side effects from medication. Therefore, our specialists work closely with primary care doctors, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, rehabilitation specialists, and neuropsychologists to take care of the whole person with epilepsy. Our neurosurgeons specializing in epilepsy surgery perform surgeries ranging from Responsive Neurostimulation to vagal nerve stimulators to stereo EEG, subdural recordings, and laser ablation.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined and supported us at the 12th Annual “Walk to End Epilepsy” by The Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the Epilepsy Walk was a great success, highlighting the strength and unity of our epilepsy community.

A team from the Mount Sinai Epilepsy Center recently traveled to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to provide world-class epilepsy care to patients and advanced clinical training to local epilepsy specialists.

This year marked the 4th visit of Saadi Ghatan, MD (Neurosurgery), the 2nd visit of Sloane Sheldon, Ph.D., ABPP (Neuropsychology), and the 1st visit of Madeline Fields, MD (Neurology/Epilepsy) and several of our Mount Sinai fellows as a part of Virtue Foundation’s Mongolia Healthcare initiative and we’re deeply appreciative of their outstanding support and noble cause.

Over 2 weeks, they provided excellent epilepsy care, surgical services, and neuropsychological testing to local patients, collaborating closely with a committed team of local epileptologists, neurosurgeons and support staff.

We asked Dr. Sheldon, an expert in conducting neuropsychological assessments for individuals with various neurological disorders and specializes in epilepsy, about her experiences this year.

“During my first trip with the Virtue Foundation in 2023, my goal was to become oriented to the clinical practice in Mongolia and to understand what role I, and neuropsychology, could have,” says Dr. Sheldon. “This year, my goal was to really incorporate neuropsychology into the pre-surgical workup when needed. And it was a success, as we provided 20 patients (approx.) pre-surgical neuropsychological evaluations.”

During her first trip Dr. Sheldon had worked closely with Dr. Bayarmaa Dondov, a local epileptologist. Dr. Sheldon trained her in administering a Mongolian-adapted neuropsychological test, which she has been administering for the past year. For Dr. Sheldon, it was rewarding to see how quickly this practice was integrating into their surgical planning.

Dr. Sheldon is excited and looking forward to seeing Dr. Dondov continue to independently use these tools and have neuropsychology become more readily available for patients in Mongolia.

Joining us in welcoming, Dr. MacIsaac, one of our three new epilepsy fellows! It is an honor to have them join our program. We look forward to getting to know them in the coming year.

"I am delighted to be starting my epilepsy fellowship at Mount Sinai this year! I completed my neurology residency at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Canada. I am very interested in the management of drug-resistant epilepsy and am looking forward to gaining extensive exposure to this during my fellowship. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Courtney, and our newborn daughter Isla. We are excited to embrace all that NYC has to offer!"

Dr. Madeline Fields gave a lecture to the junior and senior classes at the High School for Math, Science, and Engineering. As seen in the photo, the students were given the opportunity to watch amazing brain waves, as our EEG tech assisted.

“Those juniors and seniors asked the best questions I’ve ever been asked,” Dr. Fields said. “Alex and Tristan work at CEYE. Alex showed us what an EEG looks like when you sing a Maroon 5 song and when you sing the Bestie boys.”
