Pro-tip for those of us trying to stick to a diet.

Be kind to yourself as you make changes to improve your health. If you eat something high in sugar or salt, get back on track the next time you eat. Don’t let a ‘slip-up’ or ‘cheat’ discourage you and snowball into many!

Taking charge of your kidney health – what does it mean to make healthy food choices? What you eat and drink (or don’t eat and drink) matters more with type 2 diabetes:
• Limit sugars, carbohydrates, salt, and portion sizes
• Healthy food choices include fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, blends, whole grains, low-fat dairy, poultry and fish
Do your best to limit processed foods and foods high in saturated fat or high in calories.

As always, talk to your doctor about ways to take charge of your kidney health!

Type 2 Diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Because there are often no symptoms until late in the disease, CKD is often underdiagnosed and most patients don’t know they have it. Chronic kidney disease can cause high blood pressure and heart problems, so it’s important to know your eGFR and UACR.

KidneyIntelX is for adult patients with diagnosed type 2 diabetes and existing CKD stages 1-3b. Your score predicts your risk of progressive kidney function decline over the next 5 years. KidneyIntelX uses results from a blood sample along with data in your medical health record, to determine your risk score which can be categorized as low, intermediate (medium), or high. Your action steps will depend on your risk score, your health, and your doctor’s advice.

This is an example of an “intermediate (medium)” risk and tells the doctor and patient the level of risk of progressive decline of kidney function.

As stated before, eGFR and UACR can diagnose kidney disease and help you understand what is happening now.

But how do you know what will happen in the future? Another prognostic test can help. This type of test looks forward and predicts how CKD may affect you over time. Knowing how your CKD may affect you gives you the chance to take steps to protect your kidneys. The steps are specific to you, based on your health status and risk of progression. This test is called “KidneyIntelX”. To learn more: Why KidneyIntelX

Blood Test – estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)

eGFR is the lab that is used most often to check kidney function.

Serum creatinine (sCr) is a waste in our blood that healthy kidneys remove.
The eGFR math equation uses your creatinine level to see how well your kidneys work currently.

Your eGFR is about the same as your percent (%) kidney function.

How is kidney disease diagnosed?

Both blood and urine must be tested. The first signs of kidney damage tend to be seen when protein spills in the urine.

This is why the American Diabetes Association says those with diabetes need a blood test and a urine test at least once a year. The UACR and eGFR are a “snapshot” of how well your kidneys work. Follow us to learn more!
