Have you ever sat down to eat a meal, pulled out your phone, and scrolled for 30 minutes—only to look down at an empty plate afterward and wonder what you even ate?
I had a conversation about this while shooting some content with my social team the other week, and the cameras happened to be rolling, so we took it as a sign that we needed to share it.
When we eat, our bodies need to enter the parasympathetic nervous system (aka our “rest and digest” state) to be in a position where we can fully digest our food and be conscious of what we’re consuming. When we’re multitasking (scrolling, emailing, watching, etc.), it’s nearly impossible to focus on the simple act of eating. Your mind and body are distracted from your food—and let’s face it, that Instagram Reel you’re watching is probably more interesting to your brain than what’s on your plate.
When this happens, your brain isn’t fully aware of what you’re consuming, and you slip into a state of mindless eating. This can mean you don’t feel fully satisfied, even after eating a full plate, and often feel snacky throughout the day—grabbing whatever’s in sight to make your body feel fueled (which can be a challenging setback if you’re working toward specific weight goals).
My goal for you (and myself!!!) this next week is to focus on sitting down to eat with intention. Set your phone aside, close your computer, and clear 30 minutes in your calendar to truly show up at the table with your beautiful plate of food. When you take the time to do this, eating becomes meditative, and your mind and body will start to feel the difference.
Try it out this week and let me know what you think.
