Not all avoidance looks like avoidance. Sometimes, it looks like hustling nonstop, binge-watching another season, or perfecting every little detail—anything to keep from sitting with uncomfortable feelings. These sneaky avoidance behaviors might feel productive or harmless, but they often keep us stuck. Healing starts when we learn to pause, feel, and process instead of escape.

We never just feel angry, there’s usually other emotions underlying causing the anger. But, anger is still a common and natural emotion to feel. What’s not helpful though is channeling that anger towards others or yourself when it’s not warranted. We call this displacing your anger on an suspecting person, usually someone close to you.

Here are some ways you can re-channel your anger in healthy ways. Instead of displacing, using violence, or self-sabotaging, trying writing about your anger. Try channeling it into a really dynamic art piece. Dedicate yourself to activism to make a difference in the cause you’re angry about. Let that energy out through yelling, exercise, or taking it out on your pillow.

Get to know your triggers and warning signs for anger so that you can intervene and process in a healthy way.

Did you know that EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy uses belief clusters to help process trauma? Belief clusters are groups of related thoughts and feelings that shape how we see ourselves and the world. Understanding these clusters is crucial because they often contain the negative beliefs that keep us stuck in patterns of distress. By identifying and reprocessing these clusters, EMDR helps to replace them with more positive and adaptive beliefs, leading to profound healing and personal growth. Knowing your belief clusters can unlock the path to a healthier, more resilient you.

Some examples:
Safety - "I cannot trust people."
Control - "I need predictability."
Survival - "I'm alone."
Worthfulness - "I'm unlovable."
Guilt - "It's all my fault."
Responsibility - "I'm responsible for everything."

Feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Try this three-step approach for relief. Start by acknowledging your anxiety: notice your physical symptoms and thoughts. Share your feelings with someone or acknowledge them to yourself by saying, "I see you, Anxiety." This recognition helps to validate your experience. Next, cope with your anxiety by using soothing techniques like splashing your face with cold water, taking a walk, deep breathing, or listening to upbeat music. These actions can provide immediate relief and help manage your symptoms. Finally, accept your anxiety by understanding that it's a part of you but not all of you. Remind yourself that this feeling is temporary and that you can sit with discomfort without needing to fix it immediately.

LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately targeted for hate crimes and violence, with each statistic representing a person whose life has been impacted by fear and pain. Daily experiences of discrimination and microaggressions in workplaces, schools, and public spaces can lead to chronic stress, as each microaggression attempts to chip away at an individual’s sense of self-worth. Many LGBTQ+ individuals face rejection from their families, leading to profound feelings of isolation and even homelessness, particularly among the community’s youth. The pain of being rejected by loved ones can leave deep emotional scars and attachment injuries that are long-lasting. Lastly, discrimination within the healthcare system can prevent LGBTQ+ individuals from receiving the care and support they need and wholeheartedly deserve.

Effective trauma therapy for LGBTQ+ individuals must be inclusive, affirming, and sensitive to their unique experiences. Some of the most supportive are listed above. Providing education about LGBTQ+ issues can also reduce stigma and increase acceptance, fostering a more supportive and understanding environment. Advocating for policies that protect LGBTQ+ rights in workplaces, schools, and healthcare settings can help reduce discrimination and create safer spaces for everyone. Lastly, ensuring that therapists and other healthcare providers are trained in LGBTQ+ cultural competency can improve the quality of care and support for LGBTQ+ individuals.

While thinking about the possible reasons something may have happened helps with origin-finding, it distances us from how we feel. This may feel safe because when we feel we understand something, it creates that emotional distance.

Intellectualization looks like “channeling mental energy into a logical assessment or abstract discussion to avoid painful emotions or remain distanced from beliefs that challenge your sense of self.”

With all things in life, we need to lean into how this pain feels for us too. It may be safe to have that distance at first, but diving into the emotional experience of the pain is the only way towards growth. And the more we confront the hard emotions to more safe we can feel when they return.

Self trust is a concept where we trust our own intuitions, strengths, decisions, and ability to cope with life. If you have been consistently invalidated or have the “not good enough” wound it may be hard to self trust.

Self trust is also self compassion. Trusting yourself includes knowing you are doing your best, that you are in fact good enough, can survive this hardship, and deserve boundaries and respect. Try some of these affirmations and remind yourself that you are the expert on you. And that you know yourself best.

Sometimes you just need a good reminder to stay in the present moment. Not in the past, not far in the future. But right now.

When you find yourself veering too far away right the here and now, try this grounding technique. Think of, name, and pay the utmost attention to 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste (this one takes all the attention). This is a good one to pull out any moment you might feel far away, anxious, preoccupied, or whatever.
