We are thrilled to welcome the 2025 Art Therapy Lab International Residency cohort!

This year’s group brings together creatives, art therapists, and healing practitioners from around the world, each offering a unique voice, practice, and vision.

2025 Residency Cohort:
Yang Yo Kim (AE/JP)
Monica McGarry (USA)
Michelle Cohn (USA)
Geraldine Kang (SG)
Lucy Steggals (UK)
Anna Luisa Franzen (DE)
Jelizaveta Krotova (LT)
Melissa-Anne Cobbler (CA)
EfstathiaDionysopoulou (NL/GR)
Mairita Coņeva (LV)

Some thoughts & curiosities about then upcoming program:
“I am particularly interested in how the environment shapes creative practices, as well as in questions of materials’ reinvention/reuse and their interrelation with resilience.

These observations will be valuable to both my research and creative practice, and I hope they will also inform the intersection between the two, enriching each with perspectives grounded in lived, collective experiences.“ - Efstathia Dionysopoulou, Greece/Netherlands

“I’m curious to learn from individuals who are invested in addressing mental health in art and how to navigate between the role of therapist and artist.

I’m also curious about new ways to think about space and landscape in relation to mental health.” - Geraldine Kang, Singapore

“I’m curious how the people, history, and landscape of Kuldīga will shape the way I create and connect. I’m excited to be in dialogue with others who are navigating the overlaps between art, care, and ecology.

What new patterns, insights, or questions will surface through shared time, materials, and space?“ - Michelle Cohn, USA

“I’m interested in this residency for two main reasons: professional growth as a mental health professional and personal development as a creator.“ - Jelizaveta Krotova, Lithuania

How do you take art therapy out of the clinical space? Honoured to virtually travel to Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore to talk about my own successes and struggles in implementing the community-based project "Shared Lines" for the Amsterdam West neighbourhoods aiming to foster connection and resilience through playing, movement and art materials.

We’re getting ready — Introducing the 2025 Art Therapy Lab International Residency program & team.

Our 2025 Residency theme:
Inspired by gardening as both a concept and practice, this year’s residency centers on the cultivation of spaces where needs are met, growth is nurtured, and meaningful learning takes place.

By honoring the aesthetic and visionary aspects of the garden, participants will explore its metaphorical potential to address existential themes of community, sustainability, and connection — bridging these ideas with contemporary culture and art therapy practices.

Meet the team:
Julia Volonts is a licensed art therapist, educator, and founder of Art Therapy Lab, an evolving space for art therapy, research, and connecting community around the world. .volonts

Maija Rudovska is an independent curator, art historian, and educator whose work bridges critical theory, cultural research, and contemporary art through community-engaged projects across the Baltics and beyond.

Annemarie Reichenbach is a cultural researcher, artist, and community lead at Art Therapy Lab, committed to fostering inclusive, embodied, and interdisciplinary creative spaces grounded in care, resilience, and social transformation.

Ilze Rukšāne is a landscape architect, urbanist, and co-founder of ALPS, whose work centers on collaborative public space design and the transformative potential of healing landscapes.

Meet Annemarie, a behind-the-scenes gem of Art Therapy Lab.

This post is long overdue, but I want to give a shoutout to Annemarie () and introduce her here.

Based in Germany, Annemarie first reached out after following my art therapy work (back when I was still just Julia Volonts (.volonts), before Art Therapy Lab had officially begun). While I was traveling to Berlin two years ago, she reached out, and we ended up hosting a pop-up collage event together at .

She later centered her graduate thesis on the launch of the ATL Residency, asking:
What relations and knowledges emerge from interdisciplinary art therapy projects?

After joining us in Kuldīga, she became ATL’s first Research Assistant and Coordinator as we shape our research identity with intention and care. Annemarie is inspiring in her passion for ATL’s mission and endless patience with my wild, ever-evolving ideas (some that stick, some that get saved for later).

This week, she is attending the Arts Health Research Intensive in England with UCL, the WHO-Jameel Arts & Health Lab (), and the University of Florida to deepen her work as an arts in health researcher exploring post-qualitative, arts-based approaches for worlds in transition.

Congrats and see you in Kuldīga soon for our second ATL residency with !

In honor of Creative Arts Therapies Week, we are excited to share some artwork from our Create Kindness workshop last Sunday!

Designed for the community to visually explore kind words have felt meaningful, whether they were offered by others or were directed towards oneself. Asking the overall question: What if kindness was contagious?

Not only were all kinds of artistic media spread across the tables - creation evolved around noticing that kindness spans all life phases, age groups and into the environment, even if not always realised at first.

Thank you to everyone who joined us as we try to hold creative space for the questions of our time, together.
