Hispanic Heritage Month is in full swing at Mount Sinai!

We turned up the rhythm at the Mount Sinai Corporate Services Center with our Salsa Social!

Hosted by the Heritage of Latinx Alliance (HOLA) ERG and the Mount Sinai Emergency Medicine Department, colleagues came together to dance salsa, bachata, and merengue.

It was an incredible evening of music, movement, and connection, celebrating community and culture.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on the dance floor!

On Sunday, September 21, Mount Sinai proudly marched in the 56th Annual African American Day Parade, celebrating culture, heritage, and unity in the heart of Harlem.

Our float, music, and community spirit lit up Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard from 111th to 137th Street, as Mount Sinai staff, their families, and friends joined together in joy and pride.

The Office for Diversity and Inclusion organized and coordinated this year’s participation, reflecting Mount Sinai’s deep commitment to advancing health equity and strengthening our partnership with the communities we serve.

As part of our ongoing Summer Wednesdays series with our summer pathway students, the August 6 session explored the experiences of people with disabilities and how awareness, empathy, and accessibility shape equitable healthcare.

We began with an educational session entitled, Demystifying Disability, led by Tiffany Keith, MSW, Program Manager II, Office for Health Data, Outcomes and Engagement Strategy (HDOES), Mount Sinai Health System. Tiffany provided valuable insights into the realities and misconceptions that individuals with disabilities may face and the role we can play to promote accessibility.

The day continued with an immersive workshop, Understanding Disability in Medicine, led by Andrea Lendaris, MD, MS, Vascular Neurologist, Assistant Professor of Neurology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Co-Lead of the All Differing Abilities Partnering Together (ADAPT) Employee Resource Group.

During the workshop, interns were asked to put on equipment that altered one of their senses before taking on a group challenge: flipping a carpet completely over without stepping off of it. The exercise offered a hands-on glimpse into some of the barriers that people with disabilities face, while underscoring the importance of collaboration, patience, and creative problem-solving in care settings.

From insightful discussion to interactive learning, this session helped to deepen understanding and empathy.

This summer, we welcomed over 100 interns to our Nursing Pathway Program and our Administration and Operations Internship Program.

Interns will spend the summer gaining real-world insight into unique career pathways in nursing, health administration, and corporate services.

We also launched our Summer Wednesday series, where leaders share their personal stories and career advice. Our theme for the first week was “Leading with Equity in Nursing.”

Speakers included Jacqueline Zeigler, RN, MSN, Mackenzy Scott, MBA, RN, Jhovanka Sanchez, MSN, AGNP-BC, and Carllyne A Moran, CRNA. They also heard from a dynamic panel of professionals from the Phillips School of Nursing: Bernice Pass-Stern, MS, MEd – Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness, Tuan Le, MEd – Director of Student Services, and Fatima Doumbia, MPH, CHES, RN – Adjunct Professor.

We’re so excited to support the next generation of healthcare changemakers as they explore their path.

Stay tuned for more summer highlights!

Last week, the Mount Sinai Morningside and Corporate Services Center Site Engagement Councils invited Marie Curie High School for Medicine, Nursing, and Health Professions to participate in Career Discovery Week!

This event included a panel discussion that demonstrated an array of careers within a health system. The event also allowed students to connect with medical professionals and get a firsthand look at what it’s like to work in a hospital setting.

Marie Curie High School’s mission is to provide an academically rigorous, career-bound education rooted in experiential learning, preparing students for health-related careers in their communities.

Students expressed interest in a wide range of fields, including nursing, radiology, psychology, sonography, gynecology, and social work.

It was an exciting and educational day—thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!
