To mark World Kidney Day today (Thursday, March 14, 2024), Team VIVA! is encouraging you participate in, & raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy kidneys.
Founded by the The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) & the International Federation of Kidney Foundations – World Kidney Alliance (IFKF-WKA) – the global initiative aims to address the vital role played by our kidneys in daily bodily functioning, while further highlighting the frequency & impact of kidney disease & its associated health problems worldwide.
The kidneys are complicated, essential organs that perform many important tasks to maintain our health. They predominantly remove toxins & excess water from our blood. Kidneys also help to control blood pressure, produce red blood cells & maintain healthy bones.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive loss in kidney function over a period of months or years. When kidney function falls below a certain point, it is coined ‘kidney failure’ & can affect a person’s whole body, leading to serious illness. If not treated, kidney failure can prove life-threatening.
With CKD affecting more than 850 million people worldwide, today serves as an important reminder to check the health of your kidneys while further raising awareness of their importance.
Keeping fit, leading an active, healthy lifestyle, following a healthy diet, controlling blood sugar levels, checking & controlling blood pressure, not smoking, reducing anti-inflammatory pain medications & undergoing regular kidney function health check will help to care for your kidneys.
