We know it’s been a full day doing office procedures when the instrument bucket gets this full (and it was empty at the start of the day, and we only use 4 instruments per procedure!). While many breast reconstruction procedures are done in an operating room with general anesthesia, many can be done in the office with local anesthesia. ProI’m s of our research team for having a great showing at last night’s New York Surgical Society winter meeting at the Penn Club in NYC. .keishamontalmant and each presented their posters on their respective projects, both of which looked at the impact of different social determinants of health on outcomes after breast reconstruction and reshaping surgery. Really interesting and important work, and a great venue for sharing this with our fellow surgeons. Great work!

What a great way to close out 2024 - this week I had the opportunity to participate in a robotic DIEP flap with Mount Sinai’s own intrepid and pioneering residency program director, Dr Alice Yao. Performing a portion of the procedure with the surgical robot allowed the abdominal muscle incision to be much smaller, and therefore her patient will likely have a smoother recovery in both the short-term and the long-term. This will absolutely be an important element of many forms of breast reconstruction in the future, and we are excited to have someone like Dr Yao helping to lead us into that future. I expect lots more in the year to come!

Recovery from thigh-based reconstruction is a gradual process. In 6–8 weeks, you’ll feel stronger. Expect soreness in your thigh and chest, but it usually gets easier as time goes on. Your doctor will guide you through managing pain and getting back to your routine.

Thigh-based breast reconstruction uses a woman’s own tissue in order to optimize the size, shape, and appearance of her chest after breast cancer treatment. ✨

It's a safe, effective, and predictable way of reconstructing a breast without using any foreign material, such as silicone implants. Another way of thinking about it is that it is a “transplant” from one part of a woman’s body to another. This tissue can be collected from many different areas, but in this case, the thighs.
