This is NOT a story about knee pain...

This is a story about why you need to have an expert assess your whole body and how you use it.

Otherwise, you may be chasing after symptoms,

Or working and pushing through problems,

Or suffering through the cycle of repeated injuries

And wasting your precious time, energy, and money.

Be proactive about your body and your health. Don't leave it up to guesswork and DIY rehab.

I'm here for you and finding more and better ways to help you. Go to the link in my bio and book a session with me ASAP this summer so you can get over it and get ahead.

You're a human first.

Dancers are notorious overthinkers AND overfeelers. We are athletes who need to look aesthetically correct in our ex*****on, rather than doing things faster, for longer, or more times.

That body-brain connection and awareness is SUPER strong and hard to overcome, especially when there is an injury or trauma. That's why the non-dancey stuff is so important.

Basic movements and patterns are the building blocks of choreography. If you're struggling with a movement in class or performance, stop making it about it the whole movement artistically and start breaking it down into its normal human movement parts.

This is what we do in my weekly conditioning class each Thursday- do lots of non-dancey stuff to make the dancey stuff easier. You can sign up for class online by going to the link in my bio!

Here's what I think: the best way is to do both!

Bottom line- you can get everythign you want from either type of session as long as you put in the work and have clear goals in mind.

Most of us are used to the idea of group workouts and think that private training seems nice, but daunting and expensive. However, when it comes to something like therapy, the ideas are reversed. Which is strange to me because...

NOT ALL THERAPY IS ABOUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU. In fact, the best kind of therapy (be it mental or physical) is about improving yourself and finding better strategies to live the life you want and continue feeling good.

My goal is to have more group PT options for you because all of these benefits can be way more affordable and accessible if done correctly. Just like group dance classes, rehearsals, and group workouts, you can really improve, have fun, and be independent in your health, fitness, and wellness journey.

Private sessions are great, but they are limited by how much time I have to give to each person individually and by how much you financially can invest for that limited time. I see people for very similar issues all the time and they are doing basically the same programs and treatments, but they often feel alone in the process.

Just like group mental therapy, group physical therapy and group conditioning programs specific to your problems areas, styles, jobs, and goals can be just as, if not more, beneficial than private sessions alone.

Wanna see what I'm talking about? Try my group conditioning classes! Check out my Performer Conditioning class every Thursday at 3:30 EDT and see how PT isn't just about pain, injuries, and diagnoses. Can't wait to work with you to get stronger, healthier, and better on and off the stage!

You have a big showcase or intensive coming up and you want to prepare the right way:

If you're in a time crunch, don't try to train more in a short amount of time!

Stick with the current training plan you have now and prioritize your recovery first. Now is not the time to suddenly add more strength, endurance, or even flexibility training because you could overload yourself just before your body needs to be energized and ready.

Think of people who run marathons. They don't run their hardest and longest the week before the marathon. They did the hard stuff for several months and weeks beforehand so that the week of the event is just about staying consistent and energized.

Your recovery IS a part of your training, so plan it well. Instead of increasing your exercising, plan your rest and relaxation for after your event. Book your massage, acupuncture, your PT sessions for right after performing rather than right before.

Find ways to get your mind prepared and fuel your body for your big moment rather than deplete it with overtraining and added stress.

What's your plan going into recital, showcase, and intensive season? Follow for more ways to and with me!

Stop overtraining now!

Swipe through to see why structured rest is sometimes the better answer.

Overtraining is one of the major contributors to injury in performing arts. It's when you do too much of the same thing without allowing your body or brain to recover and learn.

All or nothing training gets you bad results, which is why we focus so much on helping you to find balance.

When your body is telling you it's had enough, listen. Better yet, plan your success by scheduling days off and other activities rather than waiting until something is wrong.

Why is health the last thing on our minds?

You're investing all of this time, money, and effort into being ready.

But, at the end of the day, if your health is πŸ’© you are probably wasting a lot of it.

Proper fitness, sleep, and doctors visits are NECESSARY, not an after thought.

Think of how much time, money, and energy is lost when you're injured, sick, and simply can't perform because your health gets in the way.

It doesn't matter if you have perfect headshots, the best shoes, and an impeccable resume if you can't even function well.

Change your mindset and priorities around your health and wellbeing, and you'll see way better results than trying to deal with it later.

So, are you investing enough into your health? Talk to me, and we'll find a way to get you on track.

Don't be a lead balloon.

90% of what matters in your rehab comes from attitude and personality.

This goes for both patient and clinician. If you're bored in a session, it shows. And it doesn't make the session worthwhile for anyone.

Studies show that patients who like their clinicians have better results.

And other studies show that very little of the actual treatment you get directly causes improvement.

It doesn't mean that PT is pointless or that it doesn't matter where you get treatment.

It means that personality, communication, and being human matters most.

If you're getting treatment from someone who doesn't give you energy, attention, or even shows a hint of humanity, G**O.

And if you're expecting miracles to happen without participating in your sessions, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

All in all, you'll get what you invest your time, money, and energy into.

πŸ›‘Stop and read this!πŸ›‘

My last post was showing you the Beighton scale, which is a clinical test for hypermobility. Many people with flexibility issues may have a high score on that scale...which is a problem.

Hypermobility is not πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ something cool or something you should strive for. It's a syndrome...a medical condition.

I have hypermobility, and many of my doctors agree that it is probably a major reason for many of my injuries πŸ€•, my "weird" symptoms and reactions to certain things πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ, and my chronic pain πŸ”₯.

If you scored at a 4 or higher on the Beighton, you should be working on strength πŸ’ͺ and stability πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈ, not stretching for flexibility.

The party tricks are fun and often teachers and choreographers love doting on your beautiful lines, but if you continue to push into your loose joints over time, there will be problems.

Take care of yourself and invest in your healthy body now. Strength training and learning how to listen to and manage your body's sensations are key to feeling good in your body for your whole lifetime.

Performing artists tend to be workaholics when it comes to their art.

When you overtrain, you are putting your body πŸ’ͺ and mind 🧠 under more stress than it can handle.

Some stress is good and can help you adapt and improve. But too much of it without breaks or rest will eventually lead to you breaking down.

The first step to breaking the cycle is REST.

This doesn't mean quit or do absolutely nothing for a few days or weeks and then jump right back in. It means you must start cutting out βœ‚οΈ stuff instead of adding more.

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Start small by reducing the intensity of your workouts or practices.

⏰ Don't immediately fill up every second of your day to be "productive".

πŸ—‘ Delegate or eliminate certain tasks in your daily life for a bit so you can focus on yourself and your healing.

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ Working with a professional who understands performance, fitness, injury, and pain is crucial, especially if you work with one who's been there and done that πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ.

If this sounds like you, send me a DM to set up a private session. πŸ™ŒLet's work together on where and how you can rest without feeling like you're falling behind. πŸ™Œ

Physical Therapy isn't just about pain and injury.

Physical Therapy is about your function. A good PT will use many approaches, many modalities, many tools, and, ultimately, will focus on YOU.

The WHOLE YOU.

Yes, sometimes we do hands-on work, posture and alignment, and theraband exercises. But those aren't the most skilled activities, and they usually can only take you so far.

PT should be interactive, should grow and progress with you, and should involve a lot of questions, possible solutions, and education. How can you get better or achieve your goals in your life if PT only focuses on temporary pain relief?

You need to work with someone who knows how to listen, how to research, how to plan a program, how to goal set and modify, how to integrate your time, energy, and whole self, and how make your daily life functions easier.

That's why I offer more than just one thing. I have PT sessions for those with injuries and pain and PT- strength & conditioning hybrid sessions for the late stages of rehab and recovery (or to just get in shape without fear of getting hurt).

I have in-person and virtual options so we can work on your goals in the right environment.

I have digital programming so you can learn and move in safer, smarter ways that directly translate to classes, rehearsals, auditions, and performances.

Start your 2022 strong by booking with me. Whatever your performance, body, and health goals are, we can find a way to achieve them together. Shoot me a DM to set up a session!

"I dream of being able to palm the floor with straight legs"

I had a patient who had the "tightest hamstrings"... his fingertips went midway to his shins when he tried to bend over with knees straight. He was seeing me for another injury in his back, but he was so tight in his hips and legs that he assumed it was a part of the problem.

He had tried stretch routines and nothing every changed. He made his Broadway debut in a dancing ensemble track, but he could never get his leg to kick high enough. The more he tried to force movement, the more his back bothered him.

So we focused on everything else!

We really focused on strength training and mobility of his whole body, not just his hamstrings and lower back. After changing his mindset and his training routine, he was showing off kicks above 90!

When he was able to do a consistent strength training routine and changed his mental relationship with pain, flexibility, and his body overall, he was able to finally palm the ground while bending forward with his knees straight and together!

If your routine isn't achieving your goals, you have to make a new one. But it's a lot to do alone.

I can help you build a program and teach you how to maintain and progress on your own, just like this patient here. Send me a DM to get on my schedule so we can start going after your goals!
