Making Strides in Kidney Regenerative Medicine. KRM Lab Director shares that while it is a long-term goal to develop full-size kidney tissue, our team is accessing technology to reeducate adult stem cells to function like kidney cells. When aggregated, these cells form a minute version of a kidney called an organoid. We are studying implanted organoids to learn how and if they can filter waste.

In a recent, groundbreaking discovery about the cellular protein LRRK2, our team identified a way to alter LRRK2 so that cells in organoids can position their mitochondria appropriately. Correct mitochondrial positioning within cells makes energy use efficient and promotes the essential functions of waste handling. This finding addresses a barrier to increasing the function of laboratory-made kidney tissue.

, and the entire Rogosin community are excited for the next breakthrough to advance regenerative medicine on behalf of those Rogosin serves. To learn more about supporting innovation in kidney medicine, please contact us at ri-development@nyp.org.

We welcome Joseph Kim, MD to our team! Dr. Kim joined Rogosin after completing a fellowship at Columbia and a residency at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Kim shares “I wanted to work at Rogosin because we have one of the strongest home dialysis programs in the City, as well as a partnership with Weill Cornell Medicine,” says Dr. Kim. For me, part of the appeal of nephrology is that we care for patients over long periods of time and really get to know them. When a patient comes to me, I want to hear their story and learn all about them so I can help provide the best kidney care that Rogosin and Weill Cornell can offer.” To learn more visit https://rogosin.org/physicians/joseph-kim-md/ or call 212-746-1566.
