Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 29th Annual Douglas West Endowed Memorial Lecture: VIVA VERDI!: How Art and Vocation Shape Healthy Aging.

From the film screening to the panel discussion, the evening sparked meaningful conversation about how creativity, purpose, and intergenerational connection can enrich the aging experience and support whole-person health. These ideas are central to our mission—as we are committed to helping older adults thrive with dignity, meaning, and connection.

"For centuries, aging was viewed as an immutable process—a slow, inevitable decline of the body and brain. Advances in modern neuroscience are challenging that view, and new discoveries are revealing insights that show brain aging is a dynamic and modifiable process shaped by cellular resilience, vascular health, immune regulation, and even regenerative signals from the blood."

How Mount Sinai research is bridging molecular discovery, clinical research, and therapeutic innovation to understand, promote lifelong brain health.

"One of a caregiver’s most essential roles is to preserve the patient’s identity, according to clinical psychologist Dr. Allison Applebaum, director of the Steven S. Elbaum Family Center for Caregiving at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York. Without someone in the room who can say who this person is, what they value, and what their life looks like outside the hospital, Applebaum says that clinical teams tend to fill the gaps with assumptions based on age, diagnosis and current appearance. The caregiver is the one person who can correct that picture."

When illness strikes, one family member often becomes the patient’s representative in a complicated healthcare system. They seldom receive guidance on how to do it well.

Congratulations, Dr. Noelle Marie Javier, on this well-deserved honor!

2026 Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Awards Announced

The Hastings Center for Bioethics and the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2026 Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Awards. They recognize physicians who provide exceptional care for patients nearing the end of life with outstanding technical competence, personal integrity, empathic communication, active family engagement, thoughtful discussions about advance directives, and compassionate relief of suffering.

The 2026 awards include:

Three Early-Career Physician Awards: A $15,000 award for each physician with up to 10 years of practice who demonstrates excellence in palliative care.
Dr. Richard Payne Senior Leadership Award: A $25,000 award honoring a senior physician with 15 or more years of practice for outstanding contributions to palliative care and dedicated service to underserved and vulnerable communities.

The Cunniff-Dixon Foundation created and funds these awards to enrich the provider-patient relationship near the end of life through education, collaboration, and recognition.

The Hastings Center for Bioethics, which has done groundbreaking work on end-of-life decision-making, co-sponsors the program.

“Our prestigious selection committee has once again selected a special group of physicians excelling in their field of palliative care and in the practice of heart and human-centered medicine,” said Andy Peters, Executive Director of the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation. “We hope that by shedding light on these leaders and their teams, the important model that is palliative care will continue to grow and serve our communities.”

The 2026 recipients are:

Dr. Richard Payne Senior Leadership Award Noelle Marie Javier, MD, AGSF, FAAHPM, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. As a dedicated internist, geriatrician, and palliative care physician who carries and celebrates multiple intersectional identities, including being a woman, Filipina, an immigrant, and born transgender, she has devoted her time and efforts in contributing to and amplifying the provision of high-quality, inclusive, affirming, and compassionate geriatric, hospice, palliative, and end-of-life care towards marginalized minority communities, especially the LGBTQI+ people living with serious and advanced illnesses. She has achieved these goals in part through ongoing interprofessional healthcare education, collaboration with research experts, and partnerships with local and national organizations to recommend changes in policies and practice patterns. She has presented her work in both national and international conferences. Dr. Javier is the past chair for both the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and LGBTQI+ SIG of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, a past board member of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality, a current member of the Ethics Committee of the American Geriatrics Society, and a current member for both the Health Equity Commission and Women and Medicine Commission of the Society for General Internal Medicine.

“Every specialty now cares for older adults,” Dr. Helen Fernandez says. “Our responsibility is to prepare physicians who understand aging in all its complexity and can bring that perspective into whatever field they choose.”

Nick Safian, MD, remembers when his grandparents began showing signs of dementia while he was in college. His family faced difficult decisions about where they would live, how to keep them safe, and how to preserve their independence. He watched the strain on his mother and her siblings as they sear...

New research from Mount Sinai challenges long-held assumptions about age and cancer care. A recent study found that lung cancer surgery can be safe and effective for many patients over 80—with survival and quality-of-life outcomes comparable to younger patients when individuals are carefully selected based on overall health, not age alone.

As our population ages, these findings highlight the importance of expanding access to potentially life-saving treatments and ensuring older adults are not excluded from care decisions simply because of their age.

👉 Read the full press release:

Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center have found that adults aged 80 and older with early-stage lung cancer can safely undergo surgery and achieve outcomes comparable to younger patients, challenging longstanding assumptions about age a...
