“I just could not pass up the opportunity to save a life at no expense to me whatsoever. I am passionate about philanthropy of all forms and this was just another way for me to give back to those in need, and what more special way to do so than to potentially save a life. The resources at Be The Match, the kindness, the support, the transparency, throughout the entire process all just added to what was already a great experience.

This takes me to my next point, which is reducing the disparity in Hispanic/Latino marrow donors is about informing the communities about the process. In my personal experience, I would highlight two main issues. The first of those issues was exposure. Be The Match is such a great organization and the marrow registry represents a great opportunity to save a life and yet, I had no knowledge of either. I believe we have to expand the outreach of the organization into the Hispanic/Latino communities through continued initiatives such as this. With the knowledge comes the solution to the second issue, breaking down the conventional fears that surround bone marrow donation. The lack of knowledge causes fear of the unknown and with the plethora of knowledge that is readily available to potential donors, we can work to deconstruct these fears.”

Our Story

As part of our commitment to providing the most comprehensive and lifesaving products and services possible to our many communities in NY, NJ and beyond, NYBC has partnered with Be The Match®, America’s Bone Marrow Registry, in the recruitment and management of unrelated volunteer bone marrow donors. Together, NYBC and Be The Match® help patients fight blood cancers (like leukemia and lymphoma) and other diseases (immune deficiencies) and connect them with their donor match. Since 1989, NYBC has added over 240,000 donors to the Be The Match® Registry and helped over 1,400 donors donate bone marrow or stem cells to patients in need.
