When Mood Affects Performance: 3 Strategic Ways to Reset

If your energy is down, your edge feels dulled, and your motivation is inconsistent, do not ignore it.

Mood affects performance. And performance affects everything else.

Here are three evidence-based strategies I often recommend to executives who want to reset without losing momentum.

1. Train Your Body to Lift Your Mind

Regular movement is one of the most powerful treatments for depression. Not extreme training. Consistent movement.

A 20 to 30-minute brisk walk before work. Strength training three times per week. Even short structured workouts improve dopamine and norepinephrine, the same systems targeted by many medications.

Discipline first. Mood follows.

2. Stabilize Sleep Like It Is a Business Priority

Sleep disruption worsens mood, focus, and emotional resilience. Many executives treat sleep as optional. It is not.

Set a fixed wake time. Protect the hour before bed. Reduce alcohol during the week.

When sleep stabilizes, cognitive performance and mood stabilize.

3. Use Behavioral Activation

This is one of the most effective treatments for depression. It is simple and strategic.

Schedule one meaningful action daily that moves something forward. A difficult email. A workout. A conversation. A small professional task you have been avoiding.

Do not wait to feel motivated.

Act first. Momentum rebuilds confidence. Confidence improves mood.

Read Adult ADHD Psychiatrist Scott Shapiro, MD's article published in Psychology Today.

Many professional women assume their overwhelm, procrastination, and disorganization are character flaws. However, it may be undiagnosed ADHD. Many women are diagnosed later.

Do you avoid social situations? After a group gathering, do you obsess about how you came across?

You may be struggling with social anxiety - something that is more than just shyness and actually can improve with professional treatment. Learn more.

02/24/2026

An estimated 15-24 million adults in the U.S. live with social anxiety disorder.

It’s the third most common mental health condition, yet most people wait 10 years or more before seeking treatment. Why? Because social anxiety often goes unrecognized or gets labeled as "being shy."

BUT being shy doesn't come with the physical symptoms that social anxiety disorder does: rapid heartbeat, sweating, dizziness, even gastrointestinal distress.
