A four-selvedge piece woven in the Fringeless style on the loom. I wove this one a few years ago. It seems a good reminder during the holidays. Let’s face it, it is so easy to get swept away by all the things we think we have to do. But is what we are spending time on the most important thing? The best thing for ourselves and our families? It feels so hard to know. Still, asking the question is a good step. Remember to take time to just be, whatever that means for you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

September 11
Twenty years ago the horrors of September 11 brought our world to a halt.
I was walking across town with a friend to attend a weekly professional meeting when it happened.
Traffic stopped, buses pulled over, people on 79th Street in Manhattan and people everywhere staggered, bewildered, unable to understand what was happening and what to do. My friend and I turned around and went home.
When I got home I wanted to count all my chickens, reach out and touch everybody, see where they were, how they were.
Everyone was tucked away except for Debbie, my daughter in law, who was pregnant with her first child. I was wild with worry. Eventually we were able to make phone contact, and she told me she was on a bus on the way to my house. I fantasized about finding that bus and taking her home myself. This was clearly impossible.
Hours later she arrived at my apartment, safe, shaken. I was so grateful to have her near.
Her home, her husband, were in New Jersey. There was no way to get there at that time. Debbie deeply needed to go home. The next day we were able to drive her there. The streets were empty, except for many police cars.
A few days later I was able to help the many terrified victims of the attack by organizing a group of psychoanalysts who met with groups and individuals to process this tragedy.
Now I rarely think of it. But in the last week or so I've contacted my friends and associates who went through this with me.
Luckily we have all survived, so far, extinction by Covid. We are all vaccinated.
Nevertheless, we're mostly wrung out and played out. It's time to concentrate on self care, including restorative yoga, calming breathwork, and soothing meditations, feeling alive in this very moment.
Advocating for kids: Resources that can help In a post last week, I volunteered (I need to stop doing this) to create a one-pager that outlined the current state of affairs and evidence for safely opening schools during a pandemic. Recovering from a broken ankle--yoga, PT, lots of walking, and meditation helped.
One year and one month since my ankle was broken. Lots of pain and determination, exercise and PT. I can walk without a limp and for 5 miles or more. I still have swelling and some pain.
Healing is not just physical. Like many of us, I had anxiety and depression to work through. I'm a psychoanalyst, and I am a good patient. I'm a yoga therapist, and yoga helps too.
I also like to make things with my hands, and so I wove this. I am a new weaver and I have a lot to learn, but the process is all. That goes for body, mind, soul. The slits between colors and shapes are deliberate- you know why.
