After years of anticipation, the first US approval of a myopia control spectacle lens was announced earlier today.

The Essilor Stellest lens reduced progression of spherical equivalent refraction by 71% and axial elongation by 53% after two years of wear, according to the FDA.

It's approved for use in children six to 12 years old and the lenses should be worn at least 12 hours per day, every day.

How do Optometrists determine if a small child needs glasses? “My daughter does not know numbers or letters yet” We hear this quite often from concerned parents and we totally understand your concerns!! This is my 2 year old daughter. She needs eye glasses full time and most likely patching therapy in the near future. A special instrument called a retinoscope helps us determine the correct glasses prescription along with a comprehensive examination. We know right away if your child needs glasses before they tell can or cannot tell us which lens is clearer. Sometimes eye drops are needed during the exam to relax the eyes muscles for a more accurate prescription.
