💚 Emily, longtime volunteer of 15 years (since the beginnings of The Open Door in 2010), says: “I want them to see Americans are people that show up and volunteer. And we give our time, and we give our money, energy, and love.”

💚 Alissa, daughter of immigrants, feels a personal connection: “I see my parents in my students, as well. And I think that makes me even more compelled to want to teach them English and help them out, just overall make them confident. It mimics my own life story.”

💚 Ruben, who immigrated from Spain as a child, knows firsthand the importance of someone walking alongside you. He shares: “It really makes a difference when someone doesn’t have to feel alone. Alone we might go faster, but together we go further.”

Our students are familia to us. We cherish this community so deeply, and we’d be honored if you could participate in our mission to empower immigrants and their families.

Imagine if you fell ill, but didn't have the language to be able to find a doctor or express your needs properly? If you had to wait for a translator? If you tried extra hard to focus on your doctor's foreign words while feeling sick?

Even for a routine doctor's appointment, being able to speak to your medical provider yourself in a common language is liberating.
