PWD Casting for Feature Film

BROOKE-Lead. 9 years old. Caucasian girl with Cerebral Palsy. Brooke is non-speaking with some physical disabilities. She can walk but prefers her chair. Her smile can truly light up a room and her frustrating day can bring everyone down. She has a subtle sense of humor and loves spending time with her family, even if physical affection isn't her thing. It is discovered that Brooke responds well to music: the rhythms help her focus, even bringing her to her feet to dance.

Shooting in Central Pennsylvania in September 2024.

The role of BROOKE is paid (a lead) and open to talent based anywhere in the US.

We are also seeking CENTRAL PA based youth with all types of disabilities for a volunteer extra role.

To submit, please send a recent photo (does NOT need to be a professional photo) and any info about the talent (short bio, resume, or any experience from school plays to professional experience) to mwsfilmcast@gmail.com

PWD Casting!!

Please submit a headshot/resume to jeweldhargrove@gmail.com with the subject line: "AS PER DPD CASTING" if you are a fit, and please spread the word however you see fit!

Writer: Michael Cadwaller
Producer: Jewel Hargrove (SAG-AFTRA table read subcommittee)

This is a VIRTUAL TABLE READ (ie. talent can be based anywhere)
There is no $ attached to participation at this time.

DATE: Late August, 2 hours or less

Longline: When a washed-up Ex-Olympian lies her way into a job overseeing handicapped patrons at a local rec center, her childish and self-destructive lifestyle is upended as they enlist her in helping them become Paralympians.

Matt: (MALE, 28) Often the only person with a normal reaction to things, Matt is a good natured, very smart, and chronically timid man with dwarfism. He’s a well-paid engineer with big plans for his disabled rec center friends, if he can only overcome his crisis of confidence.
**TALENT WITH DWARFISM ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT

Kinley: (FEMALE, 24) Kinley is a fun, brave, and chatty athlete who’s much prettier than she knows. She’ll often choose popular opinion over thinking for herself, but is one bad-ass swimmer despite disease stealing both her arms from the elbow down.
*TALENT WITH AN UPPER LIMB DIFFERENCE ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT

Adam: (MALE, 40s) He’s a straightforward, rough-around-the-edges, war veteran. Adam can be politically incorrect at times, but in a lovable sort of way. He’s in charge of payroll at the rec, is a loyal family man, and though he lost the use of both his legs in combat, he’s just about the toughest guy you’ll ever see in a wheelchair.
*TALENT WITH A LOWER LIMB DIFFERENCE AND/OR WHEELCHAIR USERS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT

Titus: (MALE, 16) A blind adrenaline j***y is the best way to describe this young man. His hyperactivity makes it almost impossible for him to stay out of trouble. Titus is always quick with a joke and even quicker on the track field.
*TALENT WHO ARE LOW VISION ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT

Sydney: (FEMALE, 30s) “Sad Sydney” is how people often refer to her. She’s melodramatic and at least a skosh manipulative. Sydney is always looking for sympathy, attention, or whatever discounts she can get at the mall for being a wheelchair user.
*TALENT WHO ARE WHEELCHAIR USERS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT

Watch “Disability Reclaimed”
on Turner Classic Movies: TCM every Sunday night in July to celebrate Disability Pride Month with TCM host Dave Karger and my CP brother, the fantastic Lawrence Carter-Long!

Double features curated by Lawrence Carter-Long air Sundays beginning at 8pm ET.

"Disability Reclaimed" with intros and post screening conversation giving each film additional, disability centered context with yours truly and TCM's Dave Karger started airing weekly beginning July 2.

Three Sundays left: July 16, 23, 30!

Coming up:

The fascinating, but largely unknown disability-informed backstory of Charlie Chaplin's classic "City Lights" and premiering a silent dramatization of Helen Keller's life starring ... Helen Keller as herself from 1919, and a Hal Ashby double feature of "Coming Home" and "Being There."

Check out this promo!

TCM made a fantastic promo for this month's "Disability Reclaimed" Special Theme in which film critic Kristen Lopez, comedian Maysoon Zayid, actress Lauren Ridloff (all disabled themselves!) join me to explain why a series of this sort -- covering familiar aspects as well as more 'outside the box' components of disability representation in cinema -- is important, essential even in understanding and ultimately improving today's media landscape. It's also a powerful indicator of why preserving outlets like TCM is worthwhile.

Happy Disability Pride!!!

“Aurora”
Logline: In this epic animated adventure series, two young sisters are gifted with fantastical abilities. To save the planet from chaotic energy storms they must unravel the mystery of where they came from.

Tone: We are looking for more grounded, natural, cinematic reads for this project.

DESCRIPTIONS:

PRIYA & NIKKI - seeking real kids or teens to play twins (9-year-old, South Asian female) *Series Regulars
Twin Heroines and mirrors of one another. Independent, kind, and resourceful. Priya is a reluctant hero who avoids altercations or fighting, but still believes in helping people using her creativity and wits. She’s a talented musician and loves to make up songs with her tanbur (guitar-like instrument). Priya became an amputee after an incident in her early childhood.

Adjectives: quirky, cautious, empathetic, grounded

Nikki is the snarky opposite to Priya. She loves her powers and the attention it affords her, but her biggest fear is to be forgotten or not accepted by others. Nikki is awkward but puts on a face of super confidence to hide the fact that she feels like a fish out of water. Despite her cocky attitude, Nikki is also an innovator, and her wild side is useful at times.

Adjectives: sharp, snarky, wild, mischievous

Background: South Asian (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka).

Open to one actor playing both roles.

Note: An accent is not required but if opting for an accent, please provide a take without one.

PWD Casting: Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing Male

[CALEB ZELIC] Male, 35-50 years (Lead Role) has been profoundly d/Deaf for most of his adult life. He was born as a hearing person and lost his hearing later in life. Most people would not know that he is d/Deaf. His observational skills are exceptional. They are his super power. People who listen closely may think he has an accent but can’t identify what it is.
He works as a private investigator specializing in fraud, but the most important thing to know about Caleb isn't that he's deaf - it's that he hates people knowing he's deaf. He had a tough childhood, so it's hard for him to trust; Caleb is tenacious and stubborn, but he's also brilliantly astute - with a sixth sense for when people are lying.

Producers are open to both actors and non-actors; the priority is casting someone who identifies as late-deafened, d/Deaf or HoH. The actor must also be able to communicate fully in English. Knowledge of ASL, BLS, Auslan or equivalent is needed.

Production/Play description: Odd Man Out is an immersive play that takes place in complete darkness.
Six bilingual actors, some of whom are blind or visually impaired, each play multiple characters in the life story of Alberto, a blind musician, whose journey has him now flying home from New York to Buenos Aires, after decades of self-exile. As audience members follow Alberto’s story of love, prejudice, and fears that were left behind, they experience a multisensory “journey” as Alberto would experience, through only sound, smells, taste and touch. Here is a link to the theater’s website about the show: https://www.brtstage.org/shows/odd-man-out/
It is, at once, a love story, a musical journey, and a multi-sensory immersion into a PITCHBLACK experience. (Some performances in Spanish.)
