Our Project AHEAD interns had the chance to meet virtually with AAPI elected officials, Senator John C. Liu , Congresswoman Grace Meng , and Council Member Sandra Ung . During the meeting, interns were able to hear firsthand experiences from each elected official about how their respective offices are working on serving their constituents, such as advocating for more education of the recent policy changes, addressing the critical need for language access, and getting more AAPI voters engaged.

The Project AHEAD program provides college students interested in pursuing healthcare careers with exposure and training. Thank you to our guest speakers for taking the time to join us and give valuable insight to aspiring young students!

Senator John Liu held a roundtable discussion on how President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act would impact our community. This roundtable was joined by Congresswoman Grace Meng, Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, Chinese-American Planning Council, Korean Community Services, and Flushing Hospital.

“There will be significant implications of President Trump’s 'Big Beautiful Bill' for our health center and the communities we serve,” said CBWCHC CEO, Kaushal Challa. “The introduction of Medicaid work requirements and more frequent eligibility redeterminations will lead to many adults in the Medicaid expansion population losing access to vital healthcare services. We anticipate that some may lose coverage simply because they are unaware of the new requirements or encounter obstacles related to language or literacy. It’s crucial for our community to remain vigilant and not lose coverage due to fear or the challenges of re-certifying. To support our patients, we will continue to provide assistance through our insurance navigators and staff who can help them understand and navigate these enrollment steps.”
