It was years ago that I read a study of runners and injuries. I have not been able to find it again. But it said something that I use in my practice all the time. Apparently, the main cause of injuries to runners was not mileage. And stretching did not prevent injuries either. It seems strides were the main cause of all running injuries. That you should not do sprints at the end of a long run.
Personal experience has shown this to be true. I do the FIFA 11+ as a warmup. When I add in speed work, I start to get problems with my shins and plantar. I keep my speed work separate and I have had no issues at 56.
