The REACH Institute

The REACH Institute REACH seeks to transform children’s health services by helping care providers use proven methods Expanding the “reach” of today’s knowledge is what we do.

According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science, it takes 18 years on average for medical innovations to reach patients. Shortening the wait for science to reach its intended beneficiaries greatly benefits families, communities and society as a whole. REACH and its scientific partners believe that this time lag can be reduced to less than 3 years, giving more than 3 million young people a real chance for happier, healthier and more productive lives. The discovery of even more effective treatments is what we hope for. Please join us in making certain that children and adolescents are not left waiting too long. REACH uses a four-step process to accelerate the time that it takes for state-of-art science to reach local communities:

* Identify and validate the highest-quality scientific findings
* Adapt these new interventions to make them family- and child-friendly
* Quickly disseminate and implement these proven interventions, and
* Empower local communities to sustain this change process through ongoing access to REACH’s latest programs, training materials and technical assistance

Episode 3 of the REACHing Solutions podcast is now available.

In this conversation, developmental-behavioral pediatrician and longtime REACH faculty member Gene Hershorin, MD shares practical strategies for one of the most common challenges in pediatric practice: time. When visits are often limited to 15 minutes, addressing behavioral health concerns can feel overwhelming. Dr. Hershorin offers realistic guidance to help clinicians integrate mental health care into busy schedules without compromising quality.

We spent the past two days leading our Treatment for Disruptive Behavior Disorders training for mental health clinicians from Brunswick County Schools in North Carolina.

This week, school-based clinicians have built a strong foundation in practical, evidence-based strategies to address behavioral challenges in children and adolescents. We’re grateful for the engagement and commitment of this group and look forward to expanding the training to providers in Pender County, NC next week!

In January alone, REACH led six trainings, two of which were in-person — one in St. Petersburg, Florida, with the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County (check out the photos from that weekend!), and one at Columbia University with pediatric residents and faculty.

So far in 2026, REACH has equipped over 128 clinicians with practical, evidence-based mental health skills. Over the course of their careers, these health professionals will impact thousands of children and families ✨ We look forward to building on this impact throughout the rest of our 20th anniversary year!

We know you work hard to support your pediatric patients. Could a better understanding of school systems strengthen your impact?

On March 13, participants of our Collaborating with Schools course will learn the differences between 504 plans and IEPS (and how to help families navigate them), gain expert insights on addressing school refusal, absenteeism, and disciplinary practices, and understand coding and billing practices for school-related work. This course date is for alumni of REACH’s Patient-Centered Mental Health in Pediatric Primary Care (PPP) program.

In the words of two recent participants:

📢 “This gave me ‘permission’ to encourage parents to allow collaboration with schools. I can now better understand all aspects of their day-to-day struggles and best help them thrive!”

📢 “[This is] very important info for all practitioners caring for children and really useful info on the school angle of caring for our patients.”

Register by February 27 to level up your practice.

This Black History Month, we honor the Black pioneers in mental health who've paved the way for greater awareness and care. Mental Health America has created a powerful tribute to these trailblazers on their website: https://mhanational.org/black-pioneers-mental-health

We're also shouting out organizations like the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM). BEAM is helping expand access to culturally responsive mental health support through training, community resources, and national networks of care. The Black Virtual Wellness Directory on the BEAM website is a resource listing practitioners by state for those who might prefer care from a Black clinician – check it out here: https://wellness.beam.community/
