Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation

Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation Founded by Ali & Joe Torre in 2002 to end the cycle of domestic violence and abuse through education. These rooms are staffed by a master’s-level therapist.

By providing resources and support, our young people are able to cope with their trauma and find hope, healing, and empowerment for their futures. Our model is unique because it provides both clinical intervention and prevention services. At our school locations, we establish a safe room – known as Margaret’s Place, named after Joe Torre’s mother. In this setting, we:

-Have group and individual counseling for young people impacted by violence and abuse.
-Hold workshops for teachers to build a safer school environment.
-Hold workshops for parents to make homes and communities stronger.
-Raise awareness on how to prevent violence.
-Empower young people to become advocates and leaders.

Our staff at Safe At Home are the heart behind everything we do. 💛 Each member of our team brings care, creativity, and dedication to helping young people feel safer and braver, and we’re excited to share more of the people behind the scenes who bring our mission to life.

Meet Leslie Cardenas, Youth Program Facilitator. Leslie’s connection to Safe At Home goes back to her time as a Peer Leader at our Margaret’s Place site at John Glenn High School, and she’s now been part of our staff for just over two years!

We asked Leslie a couple of questions to help you get to know her better:

Q: What’s your favorite way to practice self-care?
A: My favorite way to practice self-care is by doing the hobbies I love. My two main hobbies are baking and crocheting, so taking time out of my day to do either one of those always gives me a boost of energy.

Q: What song have you had on repeat lately?
A: A song that I’ve had on repeat lately is ‘What It Sounds Like’ from K-pop Demon Hunters.

Stay tuned as we continue highlighting the incredible people who make our work possible. ✨

✨ Take a peek inside the Margaret’s Place room at McKinley Elementary in Los Angeles!

Ms. Destiny’s Margaret’s Place room is a safe, welcoming space where students can share their feelings, get support, and learn the building blocks of healthy relationships. At the elementary level, the program is specially adapted for younger students, helping children practice kindness, empathy, and communication from the very start.

Every detail in the room has a purpose. From the Calm Corner where students can take a break, to activities and games that teach coping skills, teamwork, and respect. With arts & crafts, reflection tools, and space to recharge, students have a place designed just for them.

When kids learn these skills early, they carry them into every part of their lives, making school, home, and their communities safer and braver. 💛
