Can a wheelchair-bound patient achieve meaningful recovery? Can people with complex neurological conditions truly make progress at home? And how do clinicians realistically assess and forecast recovery for patients with stroke or Parkinson’s?

Those powerful questions drove an inspiring presentation by Dr. Eric M. Turk, owner of The STOOP NY—Door-to-Door Rehab, at the Orion Westchester meeting in Mt. Vernon, NY. Dr. Turk shared compelling, real-world stories of patients once told they would never walk again, who went on to make meaningful gains through innovative, home-based neuro rehabilitation.

Joe Lawliss, Client Relationship Manager with Holistic HomeCare Associates, really enjoyed the presentation and conversation and wanted to give a shout out to our hosts at the beautifully renovated Sunrise Fleetwood for providing such a welcoming space for a thoughtful and energizing discussion.

This Black History Month, Holistic HomeCare Associates honors the caregivers who have shaped the history and the heart of healthcare.

We’re proud to celebrate Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845–1926) who paved the way and broke down barriers for professional nursing as we know it. In a segregated field, she became one of the first Black women to earn a nursing license in the United States and co-founded an organization to support minority nurses at a time when they were excluded from mainstream professional groups. At a time when her work was often undervalued, she showed the world that caregiving is skilled, dignified, and deeply impactful work. Her commitment to compassion, professionalism, and advocacy paved the way for generations of nurses and caregivers.

It was a pleasure spending time with the Social Worker and Discharge Planning team at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital for a Lunch-and-Learn on “From Rehab to Home: Closing the Gaps in Complex-Care Discharges.”

We discussed how Direct Hire home care can uniquely bridge critical discharge gaps—supporting care at home in ways similar to CDPAP, while remaining fully private pay, compliant, and easy for families to manage.

The recent Trump administration's federal reconciliation bill rolled back plans to require minimum staffing levels and a registered nurse on site 24/7. That means fewer guaranteed safeguards for residents who depend on others for care, comfort, and safety. At a time when residents are sicker and more vulnerable than ever, fewer staff isn’t just a policy change, it’s a real risk.

This is a moment to pay attention and speak up.

Dressing apraxia is common in people living with dementia. When the brain can’t process how to dress appropriately, seniors may go outside underdressed — even in freezing temperatures.

In cold weather, this can quickly become life-threatening, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. Extra supervision, visual cues, and weather-appropriate clothing aren’t just helpful — they’re essential.
