Special education is facing a crisis: record-high referral volumes, unfilled school psychologist positions, and students waiting months for evaluations—often delaying access to the supports they need.

New research highlighted in eSchool News has affirmed that remote evaluations conducted through the Presence Platform produce reliable, high-quality results, giving providers and schools confidence in every assessment. Remote evaluations can also meaningfully reduce the burden on in-school staff by helping teams move evaluations forward without pulling already-stretched staff away from existing caseloads.

In this op-ed, school psychologist and researcher Stephanie Taylor shares both the evidence and the practical guidance districts need to adopt remote evaluation models thoughtfully and with confidence—ensuring students receive timely, high-quality support.

Spanning state lines in your service of students is a hallmark of teletherapy, and there are just a few considerations to master your approach.

• Licensure & state requirements: Supporting students nationwide requires navigating state-specific guidelines and licensure requirements to ensure care is compliant, ethical, and uninterrupted.

• School calendars & time zones: Different regions operate on different schedules. Some states are split into multiple time zones - while others don't celebrate daylight savings time! Some regions observe religious holidays that others may not, and the start and end of school can span from May through late June across the country.

• District differences: Each district brings its own processes, priorities, compliance expectations, and vocabulary around work. Make no assumptions about compliance deadlines, evaluation requirements, or the meaning of that unusual acronym - don't be afraid to ask!

• Cultural & regional sensitivity: One of the wonderful things about serving students across the country is the opportunity to peek into different cultures across the United States. Lean in, listen, and be responsive in your approach.

• Continuity of care: Teletherapy allows students to continue receiving services even during life changes—whether it’s a move, staffing shift, or schedule disruption—so progress doesn’t pause.

Different states. Different districts. Same commitment to helping students thrive. 💙

Charger for my computer: 🔌💻
Charger for myself: a mix of little things that help the motivation come back.

As we ease into the second half of the school year, recharging doesn’t look the same for everyone. Sometimes it’s coffee (and lots of it). Sometimes, it’s moving your body that gives you an endorphin boost. Sometimes it’s bringing new activities into sessions or simply seeing your students’ happy faces again.

What's charging you up for the second half of the school year?
