Planning to run this summer? Don’t let the heat sideline your goals. “As a bariatric surgeon and a runner, I always remind my patients—and myself—that performance and safety start with preparation,” says John Harvey, MD, Comprehensive Weight Management Program, Mount Sinai Morningside.

Here’s how to run smart in the heat:
✅ Time it right – Aim for before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to avoid peak heat and UV exposure.
✅ Dress smart – Lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics are key.
✅ Hydrate right – Pre-hydrate, drink regularly, and don’t wait until you’re thirsty. On longer runs, it’s smart to replace lost electrolytes, too. Try electrolyte-infused waters, sports drinks, or coconut water. They are good hydration options.
✅ Choose your route wisely – Stick to shaded paths with access to water fountains. My favorite morning run is along the Hudson River Greenway—shaded from the rising sun and cooled by the river breeze.

“Here are a couple of other pro tips: wear a cap—and soak it at each water fountain to help regulate your core temperature. It makes a real difference on hot days. And include treadmill workouts for those days when the gym’s A/C is the smarter call,” adds Dr. Harvey. “Running in the summer is possible—you just need the right strategy.”

“Whether you’re out in the summer heat or hitting the gym, staying hydrated is key to staying healthy and energized,” says Joseph Feldman, MD, FACEP, Medical Director of Mount Sinai Doctors–Urgent Care. “And hydrate with fluids with electrolytes to replace the electrolytes you lose in your sweat as well.”

Dehydration can sneak up on you, especially during physical activity. So why does matter? It helps regulate your body temperature, keeps your joints lubricated, supports muscle function and recovery, and even aids in digestion and nutrient transport.

“You should drink between 11.5 cups per day and 15.5 cups per day, depending on your size and activity level,” adds Dr. Feldman. So don’t wait until you’re thirsty—by then, dehydration has already started.

If you’re experiencing any heat-related issues, visit Mount Sinai Doctors-Urgent Care, conveniently located on the Upper West Side at 638 Columbus Avenue.

Balance and enjoyment belong on the same plate when we think about nourishing our bodies. Instead of skipping out on your favorite treats this summer, aim to pair them with protein and fiber-rich sides for lasting satisfaction. Food is more than just fuel—it brings us together!

Tips for mindful summer satisfaction:
• Shape a Smart Plate: Think protein (grilled chicken, fish, burger, tofu), fiber (veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds), and fun (your favorite sides and or dessert).
• Portion with Purpose: Use a small plate, start with modest servings—you can always go back for more!
• Slow Down and Savor: Putting your fork down in between bites and enjoying what is on your plate.
• Satisfy and Smile: Appreciate the ice cream, cake, or pie—food is meant to be enjoyed!

So, whether you find yourself at a picnic, BBQ, or relaxing on the beach, enjoying summer foods intentionally can support both your physical and mental health! Comment on your favorite way to enjoy a summer treat below.

Here’s an inspiring patient story that went from a misdiagnosis to a life-saving outcome. "At 37, Julie Brothers nearly died from a ruptured brain aneurysm — but her gut instinct saved her life."

Julie woke with a sudden, “thunderclap” headache so intense it felt like “something snapped” in her head. Dizziness, nausea, and a stiff neck followed, but at a walk-in clinic, it was dismissed as a migraine—no scans, just meds.

Over 36 hours later, dehydration and worsening symptoms prompted an ER visit to Mount Sinai Morningside. A CT scan revealed she had a leaking aneurysm. Doctors immediately performed an endovascular embolization to stop the bleeding.

After three weeks in the hospital and months of rehabilitation, Julie had a triumphant return to work. And incredibly, four months after discharge, she even completed a Brain Aneurysm Foundation 5K—with her neurosurgeon cheering her on!
