Stenmark Acupuncture

Stenmark Acupuncture Healing and optimizing movement of the whole body with acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy, and gentle bodywork. All bodies welcome.

Treatments for family members of any age. Gentle non-insertion techniques available. Ten years in practice. Acupuncture works to improve existing conditions through directly addressing the body's imbalances to create lasting change, to navigate old adaptations to health conditions, and to encourage organs to function better. Symptoms begin to lessen while you notice improvements in movement, energy, sleep, digestion, mood, perspective, and spirits. My practice is steeped in classical and traditional practices of East Asian medicine, five element theory and constitutional diagnosis, and various techniques to achieve results. I bridge a modern understandings and treatment of anatomy, movement and musculoskeletal issues in relationship to internal medicine aspects of health. While in practice for 10 years, I also teach advanced techniques and am continually increasing my understanding of the medicine. Making connections in a detailed history, investigating each system as we work together, and creating an individualized treatment plan to address all aspects of your condition makes my work unique and thorough. I take care toward inclusion for all bodies and navigate the best approach to treatment. Gentle, non-insertion techniques and relaxing myofasical techniques are available for those who are not used to acupuncture. Some of the conditions I treat include the following:

Hormonal transitions, chronic pain, skin health, menopause, endometriosis, bladder pain syndrome, depression, gut issues, bone degeneration, musculoskeletal injury, posture improvement, pre-and post-surgery of shoulders, hips, knees, and chest/breast health. Mental health for men and children too. Fear, phobias, gut issues in pediatrics. Balance and gait support, elder care, cancer support care, and weight management. Chronic migraines, depression and anxiety of living with chronic systemic conditions. Fertility, pregnancy, and post-partum care. This page is dedicated to the guidance from all of my teachers: colleagues, friends, professors, & meditators, both wild at heart and realized, as well as all my patients who helped shape me to be the practitioner I am today, and to those that left us and must be remembered.

Pop Up Acupuncture Event for Q***r Youth post event glow: many participants had chronic pain, sinus pressure allergies, joint and mobility restrictions coupled with anxiety, housing insecurity, and stress of social pressures.
At this event for health and housing coalitions to organize for youth, acupuncture, haircuts, food, and clothing were available. Each sat in our chairs to try something new, despite fear of being poked in the ear, watching each other to realize it was only seconds before a wave of calm washed over. The room had moments of both stillness and lively conversation of sharing resources around dental services and even recipes.

“Wow, it’s so nice to sit here and not feel my joint pain for a while.”
“My sinuses are actually clearing up!”
“I don’t have a headache anymore!”
“[Laughter] I barely felt that! Is this what acupuncture feels like? It’s just a tiny pinch.”

Ear acupuncture or acupressure ear beads that stimulate and soothe the nervous system quite quickly is part of many clinic offerings, and has its roots in activism, with a detox protocol developed by the Black Panthers when they and the Young Lords who took over Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx and merged the use of acupuncture with mainstream medicine.

Pictured is a fabulous group of my student assistants and our event coordinators in the Keith Harring bathroom at The Center on 13th Street.

Several coalitions were there offering services and information on healthcare and housing, especially for those who may face a vulnerable gap where they age out of some services and are not yet eligible to yet qualify for others.

There is no shortage of places in the city where free clinics could be facilitated for elders and youth who may not seek the service out.

Ideas are in the works, and if you are newly licensed or any length of time in practice and want to be a part of future pop-ups to serve, or if you have ideas of funding projects and pop-ups like this, please reach out!

This weeks farmer’s market goods just outside the office. One of my patient clients with migraines and insomnia was on this kick - “I’m ready to tend to all the things.” They took the herbals I gave them, came for regular treatments, and we now have more and/or better quality blood in the system to reach the head and no headaches or migraines for some weeks now. So we move to the next phase of support to maintain this baseline and improve other functions. Spring is the movement forward - acupuncture benefits all the transitions of planning something new, nourishment of roots to sprout, and growth. We can tend to it in each phase.

Melt the sludge of tissues and phlegm from winter, brighten the mind, and clear the skin.
Spring bitter greens can descend heat, pungent radish can diffuse the lungs 🫁 and clarify the blood.
Recently I’ve treated a lot of shortness of breath, sadness, eczema, constipation, sinus pressure, migraine prevention, shoulder tightness and neck pain. And I found some guitar strings in those necks.
If your sinuses are still clogged, or bowels not moving easily daily, let’s get going with some acupuncture, herbs, and food therapy before spring hits. Neck and shoulders will melt as do your winter blues.
Patients love to pop in for a market shop before getting acupuncture on Weds.🥬 🍠🧄. And don’t miss the first pick of houseplants.🪴

Pictured is a raw crunchy side dish in my bowl from the farmer’s market this week—french radishes and their tops, loads of dill 🌱, and a thin leafed green akin to mustard greens. Added sea salt, lemon, dark tomatoes, olive oil, dash of ACV. A little raw crunch has a kick to it.
Also pictured baby bok choy and garlic displays. 🗓️

Winter's mojo of girth, storage and heftier meals brought in some more complex cases for me to chew. Highlights of the last two months with acupuncture and herbal medicine: turned a blue tongue 👅 pink again, eliminated chronic excess fluid in the 👀 eyes, stabilized night time racing heart panic attacks 💓🔸💗💤, reduced chronic hip and arthritic lumbosacral pains, skin rashes on the mend as well as the anxiety with them, and supported diabetic symptoms of more stable blood sugar, less fluid output, insomnia, and dryness. What will the spring offerings bring: my investigative cap is on, ears and heart open. ⛑👂🏽🔍💼✨
In addition, the subway F station outside the office also opened with the most endearing William Wegman mosaics inspiring an inner mona lisa in passing.

Spent a weekend at to descend into a bit more stillness and reflection of what the fall season of NC offers, dropping in for a dose of nature after a hint of wintery snow in NY. We discussed ideas for possible future retreats, the stability of self care rituals, reconnection to ourselves and community, and creating space to promote growth and change. The turning colors is the metal element of decrease and change. Metal rules the lungs and lower intestine. Each is continually between being full or empty, discerning value, absorbing, protecting, influencing our defenses and immune responses, and negotiates as/for barriers/boundaries. We can nurture our metal element with breathing exercises, clean food/water/air, supplementing with trace minerals, eating softened radishes and steamed greens, making stews, and drinking cups of restorative nervine or aromatic teas including linden or ginger as well as saying no to more, cutting down on clutter, acknowledging feelings of grief and gratitude, reflecting on (in)justice, rejection/acceptance, creating or reducing more or less structure for ourselves, softening rigidity or firming up boundaries. And, of course, these organs can be nurtured and treated deeply through acupuncture or non-insertion modalities. @ Durham, North Carolina

Q: How do you sneak a medicinally nutritious bitter melon into your meal? A: By cooking the rainbow. And, I soaked it with a little salt in filtered water before cooking. A great fall lung remedy, bitter melon will help clear the respiratory passages. (But its not spicy like horseradish; it resembles a squashlike cucumber with a kick.) After eating this I expelled that which has been lingering from a summer cold. A plant-forward packed punch🌱👊🏽! A plant-forward packed lunch 💼🍴! This bounty of farmers' market goodies includes : nutrient dense greens named lamb's quarters, yellow bell pep in your step 👟👑, sauteed red radishes (great lung vegetable as we move into fall season), garlic, end-of-summer-squash with crunchy soft seeds for texture, & farm ripe heirloom tomatoes sauteed in coconut oil w/pinches of fengugreek, turmeric, coriander, & a dash of apple cider vinegar to finish.

So I unintentionally arrived on this conference trip a day early, sought a quiet beach spot, and swam in the refreshing ocean without regret after some initial resisting to get in or do any of this resting🌊. Lying there with a spine like seaweed on the sand, eventually made aware some habitual shoulder and jaw tension to let go.

Slowing that NYC speed of highly driven sympathetic dominance mode (nervous system's activated state 🐝 and leaning into the parasympathetic 'rest and digest' state)🐌 = the yin to my yang week. ☯️📆📋☑️

Carving out space for more restorative care has been part of the treatment plan for many of my patients too, and lately they are seeing such improved and longer sustained results, having reached a new baseline. 🛁⛱🌳🌸🐙🗻🌌®

I am pursuing the practice and maintenance of restoration for balance.
