Frontline nurses know that when a hospital is understaffed, patients don't receive the quality of care they deserve. Patricia Dowling, RN at Northwell Health/ Huntington Hospital and local labor bargaining unit president, is the latest to speak out about how safe staffing may have prevented a workplace violence incident.

"If we had been properly staffed and there had been more nurses on the floor that day, this incident may have been prevented. When nurses are out of work from these incidents, we have fewer nurses at the bedside to care for patients. Patients should be concerned about our safety and what this means for them when they come into the hospital to receive care."

Long Island nurses and patients deserve better! Huntington Hospital must address the staffing crisis by settling a contract for nurses with safe staffing, fair pay, and respect! Check out the rest of the op-ed at the link in the comment!

📣 NEW: A supermajority of nurses at Northwell Health/ Long Island Jewish Medical have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board for a vote to join NYSNA! The NLRB will now set a date for an in-person election. If nurses win the election and the NLRB certifies the results, LIJ nurses will join thousands of NYSNA members who already work at nine other Northwell facilities across New York.

Jean Butler, RN, said, “We have worked really hard over the past several months to show the hospital that we are united and that we will not stop until we are recognized as a union and our voice is respected. Nurses are overworked, burnt out, and are demanding more for the patients we care for and our coworkers! We are so excited for this election and to finally join NYSNA and have the strength of NYSNA nurses with us.”

Victory for NYSNA nurses at St Anthony’s Community Hospital! Nurses overwhelmingly ratified a new contract that includes immediate wage increases — up to 29% over the life of the contract– increases to education differential, certification bonuses, and new uniform allowmance. Additionally, health insurance costs will remain frozen for the duration of the contract. This contract will improve St. Anthony’s ability to retain and recruit nurses! Congratulations, St. Anthony's Community Hospital nurses!

Mount Sinai nurses launched contract negotiations by making their voices heard for respect! Nurses from Mount Sinai Hospital, Morningside, and West marched on their respective bosses to demand accessible bargaining locations so nurses can participate. On their first day of bargaining, Morningside and West nurses made their point while in a cramped Mount Sinai HQ conference room in midtown. Mount Sinai Hospital nurses got their first win when management agreed to on or near campus bargaining at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Now it's time for Mount Sinai Morningside and West administrators to do the right thing! All nurses deserve accessible bargaining!

On Sunday, NYSNA President Nancy Hagans, BSN, RN, CCRN, addressed a meeting of the New York State AFL-CIO Women's Committee, speaking on the human impact of Medicaid cuts and draconian immigration policies, and the role that labor can play in fighting back. Nearly 1.2 million New Yorkers are set to lose their health insurance as a result of the cuts, and providers are already reporting a decline in immigrants seeking care out of fear of immigration enforcement.

"We need to think expansively about how to fight for protections in our union contracts – demanding transparency before the closure of health services for example, fighting for greater access to care – and to fight for issues that affect those who cannot fight for themselves via a union," Pres. Hagans said.

Nurses never abandon our patients, and we will continue to fight because an attack on one is an attack on all!

UPDATE: On Sept. 10, the New York State Department of Education announced an addendum syllabus for the mandated child abuse training. The addendum only includes the new content areas of the training and allows anyone who recently took the child abuse course to obtain certification by taking the updated portion of the program (one hour) instead of the full new three-hour course.

The addendum training will be available on Oct.1, 2025 on the NYSNA E-LeaRN website and is FREE to NYSNA members. Every person required to take the mandated training related to child abuse must take either the full course or the addendum by Nov. 17, 2026.

Congratulations to The Pitt on winning 5 Emmys! Although it doesn't get everything right, the show has resonated with audiences because it depicts the real challenges nurses and healthcare workers face in the emergency department. Katherine LaNasa, who played the ED charge nurse, took home a well-deserved Emmy! And showrunner R. Scott Gemmill accepted the award for best drama series, saying: “I want to dedicate this, on behalf of everyone, to all the healthcare workers, front-line first responders. Respect them, protect them, trust them.” We couldn’t agree more.

NYSNA nurses from NewYork Presbyterian showed up this morning to deliver their bargaining platform signed by thousands of nurses. They presented their platform to management and reminded them that all nurses deserve access to attend bargaining in person and at the hospital where they work. Let’s go, NYP nurses! When we fight, we win!
