Strike for the win! Nurses took time to celebrate our contract campaign and strike victory today with Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani! We’re so thankful for all our labor, community and elected allies who supported us, especially Mayor Mamdani, who showed that he is an advocate for New York City workers and will fight for what is right! We are so proud to celebrate with him as we continue to advocate for quality care for all New Yorkers.

Submit your comments by March 2!

The U.S. Department of Education is proposing a new federal loan rules that would remove nursing from “professional degree” loan programs.

That means nurses pursuing positions such as NPs, CRNAs, requiring advanced degrees would be limited in the amount of funding they would be eligible for. This would push nursing education further out of reach.

Before the Department of Education can make this change, it needs to hear from the public. Speak out and submit your comment before March 2. https://act.nysna.org/page/93840/petition

As Black History Month comes to a close, we honor the trailblazing Black New York nurses who advanced racial justice in healthcare and opened doors for generations to come.

During the 1958 assassination attempt of Dr. King Jr., Harlem Hospital nurse Goldie D. Brangman met the moment to save his life. She was part of the emergency surgery team and became the nurse anesthetist to finish Dr. King’s anesthetic. She went on to co-found the school of anesthesia at Harlem Hospital and become the President of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

Adah Belle Thoms served for decades as supervising surgical nurse and acting director of Lincoln Hospital. Though she served as acting director for decades, she was never promoted to director because of the entrenched racist policies of the time. That didn’t stop her. She went on to co-found the National Association of Colored Graduated Nurses to fight for the full integration of Black nurses in the profession. Her work led to full integration of Black nurses in American Red Cross and American Nurses’ Association.

Black History. Our History.

YESTERDAY: NYSNA nurses at Adirondack Medical Center marched on the boss to deliver their bargaining platform petition! Adirondack nurses, like NYSNA nurses across the North Country, are fighting for a fair contract that includes the staffing, resources, and benefits needed to care for their rural community. Because hospital management has refused to come to the table for nearly a month, nurses marched to the office of the CEO to demand he settle a fair contract. Keep up the great work, Adirondack nurses!

Congratulations, NewYork-Presbyterian nurses! They overwhelmingly ratified a new contract and will return to work next week. After 41 days, this vote ends the historic strike, which began as the largest nurse strike in New York City history when approximately 15,000 NYSNA nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside and West, Montefiore Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian began picketing.

Nurses fought to protect and improve care for New Yorkers. They faced some of the wealthiest, largest private employers in the city and fought against unseen levels of union-busting, public denigration, and delay tactics. Hospitals flaunted the millions they spent on temporary travel nurses, rather than investing in safe patient care. Despite this, they achieved contracts that set industry standards and will improve care for New Yorkers.
