AHRC New York City Providing services for people with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities & their families. Cal AHRC New York City is a Chapter of The Arc New York.

Our Vision
A socially just world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. Our Mission
Advocate for people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities to lead full and equitable lives. Equity for People with Disabilities
We’re fiercely committed to achieving equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in New York City. At AHRC New York Ci

ty we support more than 15,000 people annually under our guiding principle of equity for people with disabilities. We uphold the highest standards in supporting people to lead full and equitable lives and are part of a social justice movement grounded in our common humanity. Our 5,000 staff are devoted to the highest levels of excellence and innovation in all aspects of their work to actively create a world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. We’re meeting our objectives by not only providing supports to people with intellectual & developmental disabilities and their families, but by also calling for change in legislation and public policy, and advocating for better education, living arrangements, prospects for work and fuller lives in the community. We’re an over 75-year-old family governed organization, among the very best champions for people with disabilities in New York City and beyond. The number of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is great as are the inequities they face in a world that still perpetuates an “us and them” mentality. Now more than ever, we call upon government, corporations, foundations and the public to join us so we can effectively advocate and achieve equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"Almost 20 million seniors and people with disabilities rely on Medicaid to meet their needs, but Congress intended to cut Medicaid’s funding by $1 trillion over the next decade...Home- and community-based services (H.C.B.S.), which account for roughly a third of all Medicaid spending and more than half of all optional spending, would be a prime target."

Medicaid pays for most of the in-home care that lets disabled Americans live independently. Will coming cuts put that care in jeopardy?

Order in the court! Our Brooklyn Transitions day program experienced a mock trial during a coordinated court tour where people supported learned about their rights in the event of an arrest, observed a live court proceeding, and gained insight into the jury service process. Special thanks to Judge Joanne D. Quinones and her team for their exceptional work behind the scenes in planning this event, as well as the entire BK Transitions team for committing to making this a success.

The Senate is scheduled to vote today on the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” There can be no overstating—this bill will do extreme harm to people with disabilities, their families, and the providers who care for them. The steep Medicaid and SNAP cuts in this bill exist only to fund unneecsaary tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy. It is simply immoral.

Tell your senators and your representatives to unequivocally oppose this legislation.

AHRC NYC advocates including Kristin Thatcher, leadership, and residents and staff from supported home living rallied to save in the face of proposed cuts by the House of Representatives and the Senate. Enactment of this budget will most harm people with disabilities and their families, threatening to roll back decades of progress. We urge you to use the links in our bio and on our website to directly contact your representatives and Senators. The time to act is now.

Our partners at The Arc New York celebrate fathers who make the world a better place. Joseph T. Weingold is the namesake of an AHRC NYC day program in Queens and the founder of our statewide organization committed to improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. The world would be a lesser place without the love, care, and guidance of fathers like Mr. Weingold.

CONTACT YOUR REPS TODAY! Our advocacy priority continues to be protecting Medicaid from harmful proposed cuts by Congress. Simply put: $715 BILLION in cuts over a 10-year period will lead to 14 million Americans losing coverage and harmful reductions in disability services. In New York, Governor Hochul said the state would face a $13.5 billion loss in federal funding, and close to 1.5 million people could lose essential plan or Medicaid coverage.

If you have someone in your life with an IDD that receives services, THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW. Tell your members of Congress how critically important Medicaid is to every child and adult with an intellectual and developmental disability.

AHRC NYC families and professionals were among hundreds of people who gathered to recognize the 50th Anniversary of the Willowbrook Consent Decree last Friday at the College of Staten Island. The consent Decree set the legal foundations for modern community based services in New York State. Willie Mae Goodman and Bernard Carabello, two unsung American heroes, were honored for their combined century of advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities. A panel of self-advocates and legal experts discussed the impact of the consent decree and the uncertain future of disability services due to threatened Medicaid cuts by Congress.

One presenter said it best: "The victories that we've think we've won don't stay won. We have to remain vigilant because the motivations that brought people to Willowbrook are still with us."

Photo 1: Geraldo Rivera and Bernard Carabello reflected on their 50+ year friendship since meeting in 1972 as part of Geraldo's famous report about Willowbrook.

Photo 2: The panel discussed past, present, and future issues affecting the disability community.
