AHRC New York City

AHRC New York City Providing services for people with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities & their families. Cal AHRC New York City is a Chapter of The Arc New York.

Our Vision
A socially just world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. Our Mission
Advocate for people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities to lead full and equitable lives. Equity for People with Disabilities
We’re fiercely committed to achieving equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in New York City. At AHRC New York City we support more than 15,000 people annually under our guiding principle of equity for people with disabilities. We uphold the highest standards in supporting people to lead full and equitable lives and are part of a social justice movement grounded in our common humanity. Our 5,000 staff are devoted to the highest levels of excellence and innovation in all aspects of their work to actively create a world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. We’re meeting our objectives by not only providing supports to people with intellectual & developmental disabilities and their families, but by also calling for change in legislation and public policy, and advocating for better education, living arrangements, prospects for work and fuller lives in the community. We’re an over 75-year-old family governed organization, among the very best champions for people with disabilities in New York City and beyond. The number of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is great as are the inequities they face in a world that still perpetuates an “us and them” mentality. Now more than ever, we call upon government, corporations, foundations and the public to join us so we can effectively advocate and achieve equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Wishing everyone observing Ramadan moments of calm reflection and renewal.

In a recent Staten Island Advance article, a Muslim community leader said, “At its core, this is about love, faith, and getting to know one another. You are truly a part of our community, regardless of your religious beliefs. That embodies our teachings - the idea that we welcome everyone with open doors.”

As we welcome the Lunar New Year today, we extend our warm wishes to all who celebrate this meaningful occasion. The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the year according to the lunisolar calendar, a tradition celebrated across many Asian cultures and communities around the globe.

Lunar New Year is much more than a change in the calendar—it is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors, and welcoming luck and prosperity. Customs often include cleaning homes to sweep away bad fortune, sharing festive meals, exchanging red envelopes (symbols of good luck), and enjoying cultural performances like lion dances.

This year, we celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse. In Chinese culture, the Horse symbolizes energy, freedom, and forward movement, reflecting ambition and the pursuit of success. The element Fire represents passion, dynamism, and vitality. Together, they inspire us to move boldly ahead with confidence, determination, and a spirited drive toward new possibilities in the year ahead.

From everyone at AHRC New York City, we wish you health, happiness, and prosperity in the Year of the Fire Horse!

Our Fineson residence, located near Union Square, is New York State’s first group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Fineson residence has been a beacon for community living since it opened on May 10, 1970. The house recently underwent major renovations to maintain the high standard of living it has achieved for more than five decades.

In this photo, Fineson staff members, AHRC NYC leadership, and a longtime resident share a moment together in the house’s living room. From left to right: Tarina Webb, Alakay Robinson, Marco Damiani, Maria Phillipknight, Orianna Venchiarutti, and Michael Weinberg.

Thanks to all of the dedicated staff members who worked together make the renovations possible, upholding 56 years of disability rights history.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act will slash more than a trillion dollars in federal spending from Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program by 2034. As part of her Disability Reframed series, Judy Woodruff examines what those cuts could mean for home and community care providers, such as AHRC NYC, who serve adults with special needs.

"Direct Support Professionals deserve to be paid more. We’re mentors, counselors, supporters. We wear a lot of hats. But even without the bonuses, I would’ve done the training. I love this work."

The 2026 Trailblazers in Health Care list from City and State NY features key figures in New York, including high-ranking elected officials, high-powered health care executives and highly effective advocates, including AHRC NYC’s own Chief Executive Officer, Marco Damiani.

Meet the trailblazers in health care, including Marco Damiani, who champions integrated care and advocates for neurodivergent communities.

Our CEO, Marco Damiani, met with New York's Senator Kirsten Gillibrand ahead of a critical year for advocacy in disability services and the care economy. Looming, draconian federal budget cuts and policies that are antithetical to disability justice and community inclusion require impassioned leadership from advocates and legislators. We are grateful for the Senator's support of our workforce and families!
