MARCH 5, 2024 ALZHEIMER'S
Alzheimer's is a progressive disorder that affects the brain. It is characterized by memory loss, difficulty with thinking and reasoning, and changes in mood and behavior
The cause of Alzheimer’s is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. There is no known cure for Alzheimer’s, but treatments are available to help manage the symptoms. For this disease I decrease inflammatory foods, test for heavy metals and mycotoxins from various mold species
Berries are among the most nutritious fruits you can eat. They’re packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can boost your health in various ways. For example, blueberries are a good source of fiber, which can help to regulate digestion. Cranberries are rich in vitamin C, which is essential for immunity. And raspberries contain ellagitannins, which are powerful antioxidants that can help to protect against disease. I encourage patients to eat a variety of berries- blueberries, mulberries, black berries, goji berries, wolf berries and many more Recent research has also shown that berries may help to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition I encourage nuts and seeds in one’s dietary lifestyle changes. walnuts are a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that has been shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. Similarly, flaxseeds contain lignans, plant-based compounds linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. So, not only are nuts and seeds nutritious, but they may also help to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Consume leafyu greens for their vitamin content, and minerals. Studies have shown that people who eat a diet rich in leafy greens have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s than those who do not. The exact mechanism by which leafy greens protect against Alzheimer’s is not yet known, but it is thought that the antioxidants and other nutrients in these greens

MARCH 4, 2024 CURCUMA LONGA
Derived from the Curcuma longa plant, this spice has been a staple in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries. Its active compound, curcumin, is credited with a range of therapeutic properties, from anti-inflammatory effects to antioxidant activities. It is known as Tumeric. This is a common herb found in your kitchen cabinet
It is great for a variety of illnesses. Curcumin, the primary compound in turmeric, plays a significant role in alleviating joint pain and reducing inflammation, making it a popular supplement for those suffering from arthritis. Its anti-inflammatory properties are comparable to over-the-counter medications but without the side effects
It is even great for digestive health . Turmeric’s impact on digestive health is profound, offering relief for various gastrointestinal issues. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties aid in soothing the lining of the digestive tract, providing relief from discomfort caused by conditions like gastritis and peptic ulcers. Curcumin stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, a key component in the digestive process, thus enhancing the digestion of fats
Turmeric’s positive impact on liver health is significant, attributed mainly to its antioxidative properties. The liver, being a vital organ for detoxification, benefits immensely from turmeric’s ability to enhance the production of vital enzymes
There is no reason NOT to take curcumin

FEBRUARY 29, 2024 AVOCADOS
Without a doubt avocados are special .From heart health to cancer prevention, the avocado is a powerhouse fruit. On average I was eating 5-6 avocados per week. Due to these being inflammatory for Type O blood , I curbed eating them—but didn’t stop
High in monosaturated fats, which have shown to good for decreasing cholesterol and preventing heart disease. In addition , avocados are a good source of fiber, potassium and magnesium which are all excellent for a healthy heart. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, avocados are beneficial for those with depressive tendency. Also high in folate which is essential for the heart and the brain. Folate has been shown to lower the risk of depressive disorders
The fiber is food for good gut health The prebiotic nutrients in avocados are needed to support the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut These gut bacteria break down food, absorb nutrients and even fight harmful microbes ( bacteria )
So start eating avocados

FEBRUARY 28, 2024 PLANT BASED DIETARY LIFESTYLE
A plant-based diet, characterized by a focus on foods derived from plants, including vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and fruits, is gaining traction globally. This dietary approach is not only recognized for its potential health benefits but also for its positive environmental impact. The shift towards plant-based eating is driven by a growing body of scientific research highlighting its role in improving overall health, and managing chronic diseases,
A plant based dietary lifestyle is NOT for everyone. A series Twin Studies on Netflix examines a plant-based diet and a carnivore diet in twins. The twin who ate a plant-based diet did better in many respects
Such a diet typically includes lower levels of saturated fats and cholesterol, commonly found in animal products, thus reducing the risk of heart disease. Moreover, the abundance of fiber, essential nutrients, and antioxidants in plant-based foods aids in regulating blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels, two critical factors in heart health maintenance.
Adopting a plant-based diet can have a remarkable impact on mental well-being and energy levels. This diet is rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are crucial for brain health and emotional balance I did feel in better spirits and mood when I tried a plant-based diet, despite the fact that I am a carnivore by Blood Type Diet.
A plant-based diet is not only beneficial for physical health but also plays a crucial role in maintaining cognitive function. Foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, which are abundant in a plant-based diet, help in protecting the brain from oxidative stress and inflammation, factors that contribute to cognitive decline. Leafy greens, berries, nuts, and seeds, for instance, are associated with a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
Try a plant based diet for one month- See if you notice the difference.

FEBRUARY 27, 2024 OBSESSED WITH CHOLESTEROL
Americans are obsessed with cholesterol . We want to lower cholesterol and bad cholesterol with and without medications. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, two leading causes of death worldwide. Diet plays a crucial role in managing cholesterol levels. Foods rich in healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants can help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL)
THERE ARE CERTAIN FOODS THAT CAN LOWER CHOLESTEROL.
One food are avocados. Avocados are renowned for their heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. These fats aid in lowering LDL cholesterol while maintaining levels of HDL cholesterol. Additionally, avocados are rich in potassium, a nutrient that helps in regulating blood pressure, Patients with Type O blood can not have avocados
The second is oatmeal. I prefer McMann’s steel cut oatmeal as it is gluten free. Oatmeal is a powerhouse of soluble fiber, which plays a key role in cholesterol management. Soluble fiber reduces the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream, thereby lowering LDL levels. Oats also contain beta-glucan, a type of fiber that has been shown to effectively reduce cholesterol levels.
Although high in sugar the third food that lowers cholesterol are grapes. Grapes, especially the darker varieties, are a rich source of antioxidants, including resveratrol, which is known for its cholesterol-lowering properties. These antioxidants help reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a process that contributes to plaque formation in arteries. Grapes also contain fiber and other compounds that support heart health
The other foods that lower cholesterol are white beans, carrots and salmon

FEBRUARY 22, 2024 YARROW
Another best friend ( Besides Man’s Best Friend - Your dog(s) )could become one of your favorite herbs. This is Yarrow. One of my best friend herbs is Yarrow (Achillea millefolium). This is a common wild plant that you probably have seen growing in your lawn. You cut it because you thought is was a w**d. Yarrow has many uses. I definitely would include Yarrow in your herbal first aid kit. It is great for early stages of fever, dust allergies, rhinitis, hay fever and sinusitis. I use yarrow before I use an antibiotic for sinusitis. It also is used for spontaneous bruising after a full hematological (blood) work up. It has been shown to prevent clots (thrombosis). Yarrow, Hawthorne and Linden combined are good for high blood pressure. Just a tip: I would rather use hibiscus and artichoke for high blood pressure.
Used in a warm bath, it can relieve aches and pains. I often add it with marshmellow, meadow sweet and catnip for digestive issues.

FEBRUARY 21, 2024 BRAIN FOG
I hear this term ‘ brain fog’ from many patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, Ebstein Barr Virus ( EBV) , cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy and patients with Lyme disease It is described as mental fatigue, foggy thinking and difficulty concentrating. You can also see brain fog in patients with food sensitivities, immune disorders, and many inflammatory diseases.
In my practice I have the ability to use intravenous treatments as IV Vitamin C, IV antioxidants and IV glutathione. Depending on the cause I can use anti-viral herbs, Vita nutrients , and other herbs to help mental fatigue and increase clarity.
Two herbs that have been studied, researched and has published studies include Mango and Peppermint Oil. The mango leaf has been clinically shown to improve reaction time, mental fatigue, attention and performance accuracy. The use of Peppermint oil has been extensively studied to reduce mental fatigue. We all seem to turn to coffee ( which is caffeine ) to help these symptoms of brain fog. The problem is that it might work but will increase your anxiety and cause jitters. I rather turn to thse two herbs. The history behind the Mango Leaf dates back to its use in Asia and Africa to treat fatigue. Mango leaf is neuroprotective and has anti-inflammatory benefits
Both Mango leaf and peppermint oil has components to reduce brain fog and improve mental clarity

FEBRUARY 20, 2024 SULFORAPHANE
This nutrient, sulforaphane found in broccoli has shown protection against a variety of illnesses and diseases including cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, detoxifying agents for chemicals, diabetes and neurodegenerative disease.
So why wouldn’t you eat broccoli. We do know that cooking of broccoli reduces the ability of sulforaphane. The best source of this nutrient is eating chopped raw broccoli sprouts. The cooking of cruciferoius vegetables inactivates the plant enzyme, myrosinase which is required for activity sulforaphane.
Studies have revealed the many benefits of sulforaphane as a true detoxification nutrient. Studies have also shown that eating broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables reduce the risk of certain cancers as breast, kung,m colorectal and bladder cancers.
So you release the power of consuming broccoli by taking a Life Extension product called Broccoli and Myrosinase/ The product by Life Extension contains Glucoraphanin. This is a sulforaphane precursor found in broccoli as well as Vitamin C and the enzyme myrosinase. This enzyme found in mustard seed that converts glucoraphanin to sulforaphane. It is that simple
This is an excellent product to prevent cancer and also detoxify chemicals from the body

FEBRUARY 14, 2024 AN ENVIRONMENTAL KILLER
Lets face it …we live in a toxic world. I have been concerned for years about the toxic environment. I have been testing individuals using Great Plains Toxicity kit for toxic chemicals and mycotoxins as well as Doctor’s Data for metals for many years.
Benzene is toxic which is found gasoline and from fuel burning . This invisible gas is what we breath and has been linked to leukemias as well as other cancers. I often find this gas in patients Great Plains results. It is frightening. Benzene is used in the production of plastics, pesticides, and lubricants. Even cigarette smoke accounts for half of the US populations exposure to benzene. The CDC has cited that benzene is a known human carcinogen.
There is good news about how to detoxify benzene from your body. It is simple, quick and easy to do - Start eating broccoli . The nutrient found in broccoli called sulforaphane is a potent detoxifiers of benzene. The clinical trials have shown that the nutrients in broccoli extends to detoxification of dangerous chemicals including benzene. It has been known for years that the consumption of the cruciferous vegetables can reduce the risk of several forms of cancer
So eat your broccoli today…

FEBRUARY 12, 2024 STINGING NETTLES
I love the plant, Urtica dioica. It is known by many names . Some names are common nettles, stinging nettles, or greater nettle. These plants are w**dy perennials and are common in North America, Europe Asia and even Africa. These plants are from the family Urticaceae. One of the courses I took at the New York Botanical Gardens after I finished my Botanical Medicine Program was Botanical Latin. In college I not only studied Latin, but was a teaching assistant for first and second year Latin students. The botanical Latin course at the NY Botanical Gardens (http://www.nybg.org) was great. The Latin word for nettle is urtica. The medical term for painful or intense hives is called Urticaria.
The tiny fine hairs on some of the nettle plants deliver a sting. Thus, the name Stinging Nettles. These hairs are like fine hypodermic needle injections. Ouch!!!
Two compounds that are delivered with its sting are tartaric acid and oxalic acid. Both are irritating to the skin. These compounds are also found in some fruits and vegetables. There is a tiny amount of formic acid which is found in bee and ant venom.
I use the leaf of the plant for allergies and respiratory issues while I use the root of this plant for prostate disease
What I find odd is that the relief for the stings comes from the sap of the crushed leaves. In the United States we have it easy with the stinging nettles. One of the most potent nettle plants are the Tree Nettles from Australia and New Zealand. This plant also called Ongaonga, can cause blistering, a severe rash and intense stings. Animals that come in contact with this plant often die.

FEBRUARY 8, 2024 SUGAR
WHO DOESN’T LOVE SUGAR . We all do As a child OI ate sugar— I am from an Italian family - I ate pasta, bread and cakes. It was a staple for my Italian-American household. But in reality sugar is bad for us.
We have two epidemics - Obesity and Diabetes. Both lead to Cardiovascular Diusease Sugar is a key player in the global obesity epidemic. Its high caloric content, combined with its prevalence in diets, contributes significantly to weight gain. Consuming sugar in excess leads to a caloric surplus, which the body stores as fat. This process is exacerbated by sugar’s ability to stimulate appetite, often leading to overeating. The link between high sugar intake and increased body weight is clear
Dental health is very important. Digestion begins in the mouth There is an association between oral health and heart disease. The connection between sugar and dental health is well-established. When sugar is consumed, it interacts with bacteria in the mouth, leading to the production of acids. These acids erode tooth enamel, the hard outer layer of teeth, causing decay and cavities I notice that individuals born in the 1950’s and 1960’s have more cavities than children born in the 1980’s and now. Possibly parents are now understanding the association between sugar and cavities
As a cardiologist I worry about sugar for good reasons. Sugar can cause diabetes and obesity. As I stated These cause Heart Disease. But how ? High sugar consumption can lead to increased levels of triglycerides, a type of fat found in the blood, which is a known risk factor for heart disease. Additionally, sugar can cause inflammation and high blood pressure, both of which are harmful to heart health. The impact of sugar on cholesterol levels is also significant, as it can increase harmful LDL cholesterol while decreasing beneficial HDL
BE CAREFUL WITH SUGAR

FEBRUARY 7, 2024 SLEEP
The biggest drawback of not getting enough sleep is feeling exhausted and sluggish all day. In the last five years I have been focusing on three important factors to help me stay young, vital, and live to an old age. The first is to drink enough water all day. I stop at about 6 pm but get 64 fluid ounces/day . The next is to keep to exercise- I do not want to lose muscle mass. Perhaps the hardest for me as a physician is enough sleep. From years from medical school, to residency I never got enough sleep. I was one of those individuals who went to bed at at midnight and later and got up at 6 am. I was not getting enough sleep. In the last couple of years I get into bed at 8:30 and am sleeping by 9 am as I get up every day at 5 am. I feel great.
Many who have sleep issues turn to natural agents like melatonin Melatonin is a chemical naturally produced by the body during our wake cycle. When we have good dietary and lifestyle habits, our bodies make ample amounts of this chemical during the day and release it at night when it’s time to rest. For some we do not make enough melatoin. There is research to show that one teaspoon of honey makes our own melatonin increase. I have personally never felt taking melatonin helped me.
I rather use herbs, CBD and meditation to help me sleep. I now wear a sleep mask to make the room darker. I play water sounds to help me relax. I keep my cell phone away from me as I sleep. For me I use California Poppy, Lemon Balm, and Passion flower at bedtime The California poppy is a poppy with gentle sedative properties. It’s not a heavy hitter like its cousin, the O***m Poppy, which is used to make strong pain medicines like morphine. This poppy contains zero o***m. But it does contain many of the same calming properties without the dangerous and mind-altering chemicals. I like Passionflower . It is also a natural sedative that can help with nighttime anxiety, increases GABA, and has been shown to help alleviate insomnia. Lastly I can turn to Lemon Balm- Melissa which is a mint herb Lemon balm, in conjunction with the other herbs in this blend, helps improve stress and mood while soothing the central nervous system and helping to improve the quality of sleep.
Please get enough sleep
Until tomorrow…

FEBRUARY 6, 2024 MEDICATIONS
Are all over the counter medications safe ? Many people assume that because a medicine is available over the counter or a doctor prescribed it, it must be safe.
A simple one is pepcid, prisloec omeprazole and nexium - These are safe but these medications block the absorption of B12— a necessary supplement.
Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that people commonly use to treat headaches, muscle aches, and arthritis. You can also find it in many over-the-counter cold and flu medications. While acetaminophen is generally safe when taken as directed, it can be potentially deadly if not used correctly. One of the biggest dangers of acetaminophen is that it can cause liver damage when you take too much of it.
Opioid painkillers are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States. They are used to treat a variety of conditions, from chronic pain to post-operative pain. However, opioids can also be highly addictive and carry a risk of overdose and death. In fact, according to the CDC, opioids were responsible for more than 17,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2017. We are in opioid epidemic. There is even a Netflix movie called Pain Killers that describes this epidemic .
As a cardiologist I prescribe statins in some cases. Statins are a class of drugs doctors will prescribe to help lower cholesterol levels. Though they are generally safe, there have been some reports of serious side effects, including muscle pain, Memory loss, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In rare cases, statins can also cause liver damage and kidney failure. Recently, there has been growing evidence that statins may also increase the risk of certain types of cancer. Statins also decrease libido ( s*x drive) as they block the formation of cholesterol this blocking the formation of testosterone and other vital hormones.
Also check with your doctor about medication side effects. Also have one doctor look at your list, since other doctors may have prescribed some. There is also serious interactions between medications you must be aware of.
Until tomorrow…

FEBRUARY 5, 2024 PROSTATE HEALTH
Prostate health is a vital aspect of men's well-being, often overlooked until issues arise. For myself , I closely watch my prostate due both my father and grandfather having had prostate cancer There are top foods that promote prostate health. From antioxidant-rich tomatoes to Omega-3-packed fatty fish, each food item discussed offers unique benefits
Do you like tomatoes ? Tomatoes are celebrated for their high lycopene content, a potent antioxidant known for its prostate health benefits. Lycopene is particularly effective in combating free radicals that can damage cells, including those in the prostate. Studies have shown that a diet rich in lycopene can significantly reduce the risk of developing prostate issues. You get higher lycopene in cooked tomatoes ( with garlic especially) I prefer men using tomatoe paste I ask my patients to buy tomatoe paste ( usually in a can) transfer to a jar and have one teaspoon every day
Then there is broccoli. Broccoli, a member of the cruciferous vegetable family, is a powerhouse of nutrients beneficial for prostate health. It contains compounds like sulforaphane and indoles, which are known for their cancer-fighting properties. These compounds help in detoxifying harmful substances and have been linked to a lower risk of prostate problems.
The last is fish. Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is a known risk factor for many prostate issues, making omega-3s crucial for prostate health. Regular consumption of fatty fish can help reduce inflammation and potentially lower the risk of prostate problems.
Of course there are berries, dark chocolate and green tea. It is important for every man with or without family history of prostate disease to have their PSA ( prostate specific antigen) should be checked after the age of 50. This is a simple blood test Check earlier if there is a prostate family history.

FEBRUARY 1, 2024 CINNAMON
February is Heart Month. There are epidemics in this country - diabetes and obesity Both lead to Cardiovascular Disease. So I wanted to discuss an herb that could be in your kitchen that is used for sugar control—It is cinnamon
Digestion begins in the mouth The mouth is a source of many bacteria . Individuals with gum disease — get heart disease There is a direct correlation with gum disease and heart disease This is why I go to Sandra Senzon, dental hygienist and author for my gum care Cinnamon may improve oral health. Cinnamon is thought to reduce the formation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that can lead to cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
Your cholesterol and low density lipoprotein ( bad cholesterol) can be inflammatory especially if your high sensitive CRP is elevated This is also known as the cardiac CRP ( C=- reactive protein ) High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, so this is a major benefit. Additionally, cinnamon also helps to reduce inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation is another risk factor for heart disease.
So by reducing inflammation, cinnamon can help to reduce the risk of heart disease significantly. Finally, cinnamon has also been shown to improve blood sugar control. This is important because high blood sugar levels can damage the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease
Cinnamon is a potent source of antioxidants, which can help to reduce inflammation throughout the body. In the gut, inflammation can lead to a number of problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and leaky gut syndrome. You must remember the gut is the gateway for all diseases.
So start to use more cinnamon on your food. You can also take cinnamon capsules.

JANUARY 30, 2024 NATTOKINASE
There has been a lot of money researching Long COVID. I have seen many patients with Long COVID I utilize many supplements to treat as well as intravenous Vitamin C and glutathione. I haven’t seen any money spent researching vaccine injuries.
There is no Long COVID protocol I want to use a detoxification protocol which involves using Nattokinase. This is over the counter. I am diligent about watching for blood thinning effects as this is a side effects of nattokinase. My regimen for detoxifying is Nattokinase at 2000 unkis twice a day, Bromelain 500 mg per day and curcumin ( tumeric) 500 mg three times a day. For those that many taken the initial vaccine and multiple boosters I would use this protocol for a least one year. I had to have the first vaccine, Moderna due to me being an attending at a New York City Hospital. I got the first Moderna shot. After the second Moderna shot I developed pain in my arm, coldness, and swelling. I went to the hospital and I had an axillary artery clot diagnosed. I was placed on a blood thinner, Eliquis. In my opinion this is a vaccine injury. I reported it. I then went on the protocol above and stopped my Eliquis. After months I had a repeat ultrasound which revealing resolution of the axillary thrombus ( clot ) . The regimen is natural. Nattokinase is an enzyme that’s derived from the fermentation of soy and Brmelain is a set of enzymes derived from pineapples. Bromelain is FDA approved as topical treatment for wounds. In additio curcumin is derived from the herb tumeric.
The Japanese have been using nattokinase for years. They have been eating natto for thousands of years It hass been used in Japan for cardiovascular disease.
