Such an inspiring morning today at Pier 88 in New York, where I had the privilege of visiting the Italian Navy ship Nave Alpino with friends.
We had the opportunity to speak with several mariners about their work, including missions rescuing migrants and others lost at sea. Hearing about these missions felt especially meaningful to me, as they touch the very human realities of migration that I explore in my work.
The mariners I met this year, like those I met last year, are remarkable professionals. I admire their discipline, precision, and deep sense of duty.
I was honored that the ship’s Captain graciously accepted a copy of my book for the ship’s onboard library.
Neither Here Nor There: A Guide for Immigrants and the Therapists Who Walk with Them

I hope the mariners may find it a meaningful read during their journeys.
A special thank you to Capitano di Fregata Sara Vinci, the first woman to command a FREMM-class ship, for your generous hospitality and leadership.
Part of me feels a little sadness that when I was growing up the possibility of becoming a mariner was not truly open to women. But I am deeply happy to see women like you now in command.
