Many people who suffer from acne often turn to over-the-counter (OTC) acne treatments. What ingredients should you be looking for in OTC treatments?

✅Benzoyl peroxide
✅Salicylic Acid
✅Sulfur
✅Retinol

All 4 of these ingredients are FDA approved for the treatment of acne. While multiple ingredients can be used at the same time and even combined, I do advise staggering their application, at least initially, to avoid excess dryness or irritation. For example, you can use salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in the morning and retinol at night. If you are going to combine ingredients, keep in mind that some retinol formulations are deactivated by benzoyl peroxide. If you have been consistently using your OTC regimen for 6-8 weeks without any improvement, it might be time to consult with a board-certified dermatologist.

What’s “Ozempic Face”?
Ozempic is one of the hottest weight loss drugs right now along with Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Mounjaro. Unfortunately, one unintended consequence is a more aged facial appearance and this has been referred to as “Ozempic face”. One note-“Ozempic face” isn’t a medical term but rather was coined by a doctor in an article published earlier this week.

Why does this happen? Plumpness in the face helps us maintain a more youthful appearance. As your body loses weight, the face will also lose fat and start to look hollow and gaunt. Wrinkles and sagging skin may become more noticeable overall resulting in a more aged appearance.

Does this happen in everyone who takes these medications? Not necessarily but it’s especially common in individuals who lose large amounts of weight rapidly. That being said it can potentially happen any time an individual loses weight rapidly regardless of how the weight is lost.

Is there anything you can do to counteract these effects? Yes, dermal fillers can be used to replenish volume and restore a more youthful appearance.

Did you know that there are 3 phases in the hair growth cycle and laser hair removal is only effective on hair in the first phase(Anagen)?

Anagen is the active growth phase of hair follicles. During this phase, the hair follicles have the most melanin (pigment), making them most receptive to the laser light. Lasers predominately work by targeting the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle.

Catagen is the transition phase which occurs after Anagen. During this phase the hair stops growing.

Telogen is the final stage which includes both resting and shedding. Once the hair begins to shed, the follicle enters a new hair growth cycle.

Only 85 per pent of hair follicles are in the anagen phase at any one time. Since this is the most effective phase for laser hair removal and not all the hair follicles are in anagen at one time, it is important to cycle your laser hair removal treatments every four to six weeks to ensure all hair follicles are treated over your treatment series.
