A new study finds that hospitalizations of people who had eye trauma, whether or not it was the primary injury, rose by 18 percent over 13 years. Most of the increase was due to falls among people over age 65. But there are simple things you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Annual eye exams are important, make sure you are seeing the best that you can. Lighting is also important. Adequate, brightly lit home helps you to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your condition feel free to contact us.

Also, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends the following steps to reduce your risk of falling:

- Talk to your doctor if you have fallen or feel unsteady.

-Some medicines can cause dizziness or sleepiness and increase the risk of falling. Also have your feet checked and discuss proper footwear with your caregivers.

-Engage in regular physical activity—such as tai chi, yoga or water aerobics—to improve your strength and balance.

-Remove clutter in your home that can increase the chances of tripping.

-Get rid of small throw rugs or use double-sided tape to keep them in place.

-Install grab bars next to and inside the tub and next to the toilet.

-Use non-slip mats in the bathroom and on shower floors.

Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or use insulin effectively to control blood sugar (glucose) levels. Although glucose is an important source of energy, too much glucose in the blood for a long time can cause damage the small blood vessels in the eyes. When the damage causes the blood vessels in the eye’s retina to swell, leak or close off completely, it is called diabetic retinopathy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 90 percent of diabetes-related vision loss can be prevented, but early detection is key. If you are living with diabetes, we encourage you to schedule an exam. Give us a call at (646) 678-4658!

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that affects the macula, the tiny part of your eye’s retina that allows you to see detail clearly.

Vision in people with AMD usually diminishes gradually, so they may not be aware of how much sight they have lost. That’s why they must use a special testing tool called an Amsler grid to check their eyesight every day. The Amsler grid is a simple square containing a grid pattern and a dot in the middle. This design, when used correctly, can show problem spots in your field of vision.

If you have questions about AMD and the Amsler grid, give us a call at (646) 678-4658 to schedule a visit.
