As a lifestyle and fitness-oriented psychiatrist, I often inquire about how much movement my patients are getting or what they're eating. But, due to our limited training in exercise and nutrition, most of us physicians are ill equipped to get into the specifics of those plans. Although it’s not necessary for MDs to do this, my active lifestyle has motivated me to earn multiple fitness credentials by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), which better inform my coaching work in these areas. These certifications are not one and done -- I have to continually self-educate and re-certify every 2 years. My own athlete mindset has gotten me very fit and strong but, with aging, has also led to exhaustive experience with injuries and rehabilitation. I've seen the rewards of high fitness, I've seen the detriments, and I’ve seen the complexities involved with recovery. All of these layers combined have led me to my next project.
That's why I'm excited to have recently upgraded my Fitness Nutrition certification to become a NASM-CERTIFIED NUTRITION COACH -- the most comprehensive nutrition coaching credential out there. By using sound scientific principles and a reasonable /moderate approach, this coaching program has helped me to navigate nutritional fads, myths, and diets and will better enable me to educate my psychiatric patients in this area of their wellness.
With this new certification has come some website edits to allow my entire message to flow more smoothly. This graphic from my website helps encapsulate a few areas of my work in one photo-- namely, exercise, nutrition, and medication management.
